I just realized only the glow wire around the speakers and cassette keys were sound activated. I thought it was all the lights. I like. What about in the center, is that a factory meter or is that added? I don't know too much about the 4700, but this and the other resto you did in December definitely caught my attention. Now added to the list.

I was wondering about the meters as well. Those are sick
The center horizontal lights are factory. I wouldn't call them "Meters". They are sound activated incandescent light bulbs kind of like the Discolite.

But they act very strange. There is one light bulb in the middle and one at each end. The center one has a blue cover over it, the left is yellow and the right is orange. Each one is activated by a frequency, Mid, Low and High.

What looks like a bar of lights is actually a row or prisms that give it the effect of LED meters.

But the problem is, depending on the song and the tone in the song, sometimes only the lights on one side light up until all the frequencies come into play.

I may change the colors and balance them, so both left and right are mids/red and the center is lows/blue or something like that to give it symmetry.

Congrats on closing the deal a long project, always feels good!

Very innovative, it's in a class of its own with the attention to detail. The rainbow meters really add a nice touch!

Holy smoke that is frickin awesome! So many hours involved in that monster, totally love it :-)
It's hard to say how many hours. It took 4 months. I was fairly diligent about working on it during the day when I had time and 4-5 nights per week, 5-6 hours per night. No less then 60 hours, no more that 100. It was an @ssload, that's for sure

Thank you, the EQ and the buttons were the hardest to do and took multipal setup's to get the light to shine through at the correct angle to make it happen

Yeah, we'll have to do a night time meet and rock this box.

There is a very specific reason I built this radio and I will explain that shortly in another thread.

Thanks Caution. This was almost like painting. Add some lights, stand back, look at it, change the colors, add/removed, Balance

The next thing I was to do is set it up so that when the radio is plugged in, the clock is on, much like the Lasonic TRC-935. That way it's just a digital clock when not in use. I have my 935 always plugged in, in my office and it's a nice clock to have. I want the same with this radio

That's a cool idea, that shouldn't be TOO hard I wouldn't think, will it?

Wow Chris!!!! You are representing hard for our boombox culture. Your work is not only technically flawless but it is also esthetically right on point. So many customations begin with a great idea or good design intentions but the finished product doesn't reflect the initial concept and in the end falls short. Yours delivers from beginning to end. Even your YouTube video was a 1st rate production. I am so happy for you that all those hours of work has concluded in this masterpiece of 80's technology and your modern innovations.

I saw the Helix 4700 that you restored for Adrian at the Venice Meet. It looked so damn clean and sounded real good. I can't wait to see this one in person. We definitely need to include an evening component to one of our next mega meets so we can truly see your baby shine.

I don't think it will be hard, I may just put a little tiny switch in the cassette storage to power it on.

Thanks Howie. I'm always competing with my self on this stuff, always trying to best my last effort.

I have a few small things today, then we will see how fast it will munch a set of 10 D Cells

So considering the amount of work, step by step descriptions and final product produced, I really feel this post should be pinned. Now I know there are already 14 posts pinned, but something needs to be worked out. I've always thought each section on average already have too many posts pinned but can't posts that are of similar content be grouped in sub folders with the appropriate tittle? For example, group pinned posts in the following manner: "Pinned LED Customizations" "Pinned Painted Customizations" etc...

Just my 2 cents...

What wouldn't be a bad idea, although might be hard to design a rule for which ones, but if we had a pinned thread, with links to large projects.

The problem would be keeping tons of post out, and keeping it strictly to the links with maybe short descriptions. Sometimes it is hard to search and track down an old build. Maybe if it was a locked, pinned thread, that mods could add links? I dunno, just a thought.

I agree, something needs to be done differently because the status quo just isn't meeting our needs. Hopefully one of the admins can come up with a better solution.
