Good topic with some excellent comments from members. I now have a newly created .txt file with all the above models listed and I'm thinking of using this as a Boombox Avoid List! :-D

Haha i hear that, trouble is, the Sanyo M9998 deck is amazing, ask anyone who has a working one and they are a joy. I have a TPR990 with beautifully working deck and a M9998 with a beautifully working deck and they are fantastic. The Sanyo in particular i love, has a sentimental value also but the sound and the deck are both killer. Worth all the swearing i did.

My Brandt AKA Sanyo M9996 (identical not just a clone) it shares the same deck as the 9998 but with even more complex electronics completely covering the deck mechanism due to it's advanced search system  & is a true nightmare!! What a machine when working though :-D

I will concur with Nick and others, my Sanyo M9998 was a bitch to repair and took a whole day, then i left it apart overnight and resumed first thing the next morning and had it finished by late lunch. Belts probably took me around 4 hrs and the other repairs making up the rest. Would be quicker second time around as i know how to do it but its such a pain.
I probably put close to 6 hours into the M-X920 deck. Like you said, it would be a lot easier to do it again. But it's still no picnic getting to the business end.

I get the impression that the complicated Sanyo decks are pretty nice when in working order.
The 920 deck is really nice.

That deck is not the same as the M9998 Nic my old fruit. Access is much harder on the M9998 to, you cant even see the motor from the back and boards have to be moved to get to the deck.

I have done a 9998 many years ago & it was tricky, lots to move but the 9996 has so many bits to move before you can even see the flywheel plus the motor is mounted upside down so getting belts on is a trick in itself!! The 9998 is easy enough once you gain access! The deck mechanics are the same, the motor mounting arrangement may be different (it was over 35 years ago I repaired the 9998 - would love to do another one now, see how hard it is

It deffo looks like the same deck to me...............

M9998 taken from this forum & the 9996.........even from these pictures it's pretty clear that they share the same deck & the motor arrangement is the same (& as hard to do) as it's bigger brother!!
