My friends and I recently realized a dream we'd had for some time now, creating the first ever "Decentralized Dance Party" using our high-powered FM transmitter and sixteen Party People, each equipped with a boombox!
It was a great time- check it out!

Hey guys,
Thanks for the warm welcome!
Seems like a great community here!
I'll try and get some pics up soon of our collection.. nothing too amazing, as they're mostly for utilitarian purposes, but we've come across a few pretty cool/unique boomboxes this summer and are really starting to get into the culture / history of it all.
We'll also be posting more photos and videos on our blog of past and present boombox-fueled adventures we've had over the years.. would it be worth also posting some of them here?
Is there a place on this site for that sort of thing?

Cool!
Did you guys also use transmitters?
We're hoping to double the number of boomboxes every time, though it's going to be quite a challenge!

We just all tuned our boxes into the same radio station that was mixing on Fridays & Saturdays.

By the end of that video I was laughing my a$$ off and having fun with you..!!! Hilariously good time!

"we need to hear an 80's classic!"
"it's only 90's"
"put on van halen right now, please"

Back in the pre-transmitter days, we would often link boxes with RCA cables and listen to mixtapes.

So, how many D-Cells did you kill that night?

(This is subject to happen at a beach in Florida soon....!)

I could see the different points in the night where the buzz started to wear off...

(I have to admit I almost didn't get past the first part of the video... some of you guys need to pull your pants up and put a shirt on.... It reminded me of an episode of "COPS") :sadno:

Wow it's great to hear all of your stories and positive feedback!
To answer a few questions/comments:

-unfortunately, we have no decent radio stations here in Vancouver.. I can't begin to imagine how cool 80's radio in NYC must have been!

-It took about 130 D batteries (mercury free) to power our fleet of boomboxes, but at 50c apiece, it wasn't insanely expensive. And they were actually decent batteries, and should last for another couple of parties we're hoping!

-We have a link on our website http://www.decentralizeddanceparty.com to the transmitter we use (the WW FM Transmitter).
If you scroll down a few clicks you can see the blue banner ad for it on the right hand side.. it's a great, reasonably-priced, battery-powered transmitter and if you click the link on our site before buying we'll get a small commission, which would really help to offset our battery costs!

If any of you guys can recommend a good place to find more boomboxes in the Vancouver, BC area or have any to donate, we're always looking for more and will put them to good use!
