Might be worth PM'ing SINISTER too, Boxedout.
I got my 931 off him a while back and he packed it beautifully and it got from the u.s to .au in one piece.

Good luck!!

I checked with customs and ply/play wood isn't allowed due to insect infestation contamination reasons. I will then have to pay 100$ to get customs to Quarantine spray it and that may ruin the box. The materials that seller would have to buy would cost me another $35-$70(quote from seller) if I want to proceed with the plywood box and then the 8 pound increased weight adds more money onto the shipping cost. Keeping in mind this is a $100 box that still needs some cosmetic tlc i'm starting to become skeptical if it's worth me going ahead. I want it but I don't want it to arrive damaged.

QUESTION IS: will 2 layers of bubble wrap and a cardboard box be enough to get it here safely?

I think that's a pretty big risk... but you roll the dice every time. A big black box in bubble wrap and one cardboard box going halfway around the planet... I don't know.

You'll either be lucky, or you won't.

Flip a coin and go with it!!

Good luck!

$476 seems pretty high for shipping. I guess Australia is the most expensive place in the world to ship something! I take it this is a fast delivery price? I just sent a box US to Philippines that was 24" X 24" x 24" and weighed over 100lbs and it was $80.00.
Of course it will take close to 2 months to arrive....
I have also air freighted entire beds from the Philippines to the US, big giant mothers, for $1500. 1 week delivery.

There must be a better way than the Post Office. UPS? FED EX?

The most I ever paid was around $200 for the Pioneer CK-5F I had sent from Austrailia via two week delivery. (Air to Ground with insurance. And it's much heavier than the Lasonic.) No way shoud this box coast that much. I'd be very, VERY leery of what your being told. Especially if your buying a broken one. :nonono:

I totally agree. Even with a really good packing job, you shouldn't be paying more than $200. Something just doesn't add up with that... :hmmm:

Wow that's crazy high. I don't think I ever paid over $100 for any boombox shipping and I've had boxes shipped from Europe, Asia, and Australia. Granted these were all the slow 1 to 2 month by ship methods.

Even if the box weighed 50lbs. (or 22.73kgs), Priority Mail is still $200 cheaper. There's no way that shipping box weighs 50 pounds.

Priority Mail® International
Max. length 42", max. length plus girth combined 79"
6 - 10 Days $277.65
Calculated for 50lbs.

So, what caused it to jump that high?

I'm not so sure what to do now really...you guys all raise good points and I appreciate you all being honest.
The seller mentioned as well that after a pre-ship check over there is static on FM stereo mode , on mono it is clear, not sure if it`s because of no antennas? AM and Shortwave , tape playback are fine. The switches are all clean - After a short time the static goes away. The tuner board was changed out for the band selector switch which on the original board was loose.
On the plus side,he did mention he ships insured?
Do you think I should just take a risk or get a refund then hold out for another Lasonic. What would you do if you were me?

I wouldn't pay above $200 to ship any box anywhere! I had BomBeat WX1 shipped from austraila and it was $100! took 2 months to get it but I've got more time then money

Did a quick postal calculation for you...

I have a Lasonic TRC-931 original hard square version...

If I made a cardboard double boxed crate plus hard foam and bubble wrap, disconnected the transformer and packed seperate to keep it from bouncing around...giving 15lbs for the box itself (And that's being WAY generous as it's no heavyweight.) and 20lbs of packaging...the total to ship from my zip in Alabama is (if I print the label online...)....

$190.38 Priority Mail International, 6-10 Day Delivery :-D (This does not include costs of packaging...but it won't cost $200 or more in materials. )

(I shipped a JVC PC-55 to Germany for $145.00 and believe me, it's a helluva lot heavier than a TRC-931. The difference here is distance. And yes, you'd get it on time.)

If were you, Boxedout, and I was at one stage when I dearly neeeeded a TRC-931, I'd hold out.

Patience is the number one virtue to uphold in collecting ghettoblasters.

One will turn up eventually that will be in better condition and be able to be shipped reasonably. You've done the BEST thing you possibly could have by letting all the brothers of boomboxery know you're in need of one, now it's just a waiting game for all the planets to get into alignment.

The main thing I'm concerned about is that the damage to the case could get far, far worse in transit, then you'll be looking for another one and that's not a good place to be in.

Patience will pay off in the long run.

Thanks heaps for all your replies. You guys have been great and given good advice, most importantly accepted me as part of the community despite not owning any boomboxes yet  With much perseverance, I messaged Peter ( stynger 007 ) for a refund. He did offer it and I was reluctant to accept as I have looked high and low and truly felt that this was the box for me. He is a top bloke but you have all raised valid points, one that really got me thinking was Gluecifer's comment about the damage. Too true, so with much regret I have decided to not proceed. Now all I need is to get the money back but I'm sure that shouldn't be a drama.

The search continues. I will keep you guys updated if anything changes..
Cheers,

David

Take everybody's advice and hold out for another box - that shipping charge is ridiculous!

If Blasterpunk had multiples of the TRC-931 (I think he only has 2), I'd tell you to ask him if he'd sell you one 'cause he lives in Germany - perhaps the shipping charge is much lower coming from there...

Good luck, regardless! :-)

:agree: Spot on Rick and good advice.
Don't rush to purchase or you'll end up with a lot of junk and a lot of money wasted, be patient and keep searching frequently and you'll find what you want.
