norm is still 'more right' than i am - :-)

because - if you can get these hi-amp D cells --to fit INSIDE your box --
than you have a very elegant/cool rig

or even if they are 'outboard'
you have eliminated the inverter :-D

D cells, rated at 10,000 mAH. For sale all over the place. This is just one example. If they are over advertising their capacity, then they ALL are because 10,000 mAH capacity for a D is common. All I know is that AA NiMH cells last an insanely long time if you get a good brand. If D cell manufacturers exagerate their specs then I'm sure Gel cell manufacturers do likewise as well.

F cells (Long D) cells, rated at 13,000 mAH.

8xD battery holder. $ 3.51 cents at mouser.com

Of course, they are all availabe on the bay too.

OK Ira, you keep on using the gel cells. I don't have any scooters, golf carts, rotating beach chairs, etc. to give me experience. I have all my computer gear protected with large UPS's that use 4x7ah batteries each, and they last 20 minutes or so. Tops. All I'm saying is D cells are available and they can be used on any boombox that takes D cells, and rotated from box to box. Or they can be put into a battery holder and used to create a custom pack of any voltage. So for my money, I'll stay with the D's. If I don't need to use the pack/inverter combo, I can just take out the D's and put them into my boomboxes directly. I'm just saying...... :-D

johhny --12 volts is a very common system --so the 8 battery holder is very available-

but ---if you have trouble locating a 10 battery holder -
then buy 2 of the 8s --cut one --and rig it in-
or find a 2 battery holder --and rig that

:agree: Like the old man says.

Also, keep in mind that rechargeables are generally 1.2volts instead of 1.5volts so when you are creating custom battery packs, you'll want to factor this into your computations. Luckily, most boomboxes are simple devices that don't care too much about voltage, as long as it can maintain the current without voltage drop and that is where NiMH's excel.
