Hi, just wanted some feedback on what peoples favorite mid-sizers are and why. I'm in Australia and decent boomboxes are pretty hard to find (i'm sure Aussie members would agree) however I've got family coming out from the UK around Christmas time and they asked if I needed anything brought over (suckers), so I thought I should really choose carefully about which box to try to obtain (probs from ebay.co.uk). Any thoughts would be much appreciated.........................

Peace..............

I always get the sizing wrong so forgive me if it's too big, but I'd go for a JVC M70 if you can wangle it.

It's tried, true and tested ghettoblasting goodness.

Good luck!

Rock On.

I've never owned or heard one, but Glue mentioned the one box that almost everyone here'll bring up at some point.

Supposedly, it's THE BOX to beat.

Good luck!

I think that everyone has a difference of opinions on size and correct me if I am wrong ;-) but there are mini's 10" - 14" then small 14' - 17' then mid 17" - 21" then large 21" - 25" then xlarge 25" +

My 2 favorite mid-size boxes are the JVC M70 and Sanyo M9994k for different reasons. The M70 is the best all around mid-size box. It has excellent sound with it's hard hitting bass and detailed highs...and it get loud as hell. It is also good on batteries and is a great carry around box. The 9994K is my favorite to listen to indoors. It is one of the most beautiful sounding boxes at normal listening volume. It has solid bass, very detailed highs, and one of the nicest "wide" settings you will hear on any boombox. You will hear those finite details that other boomboxes can't reproduce, and because they are hard to find it is one box I will NEVER sell. The M70 was one of the best selling boxes in the 80's and are always available....but as you may know, you can never have just one...get as many as you can!!... :-D

...Mono you gotta hear an M70 sometime. I think the overall sound and volume will surprise you for a box of it's size. It crushes a lot of my bigger boxes in sound and volume...next time I am in Philly I will swing by your way... :-D

to me --in the mid-world.......

the aiwa 950/955 has the best tweets
the sanyo 9994 has the best bass (up to an idiot- safe volume)

the formidable m70 has about 90% of both :-D

best move is to collect all three

:agree:
--there maybe as many as 25 great sounding mid-size boxes out there -
cant go wrong :-)

most are not extreme rare -
and the ebay prices for a very decent one of these
should be about $60 to 350

Haven't heard a M70 yet, but yes sony 66 and 77 are great boxes . :-) Where did those sonys go? There used to be half a dozen for sale at a time on ebay.

fave list:
Crown 950. It just has a great 80s sound and look. The oversized volume knob on the top is just too cool. The lights, while few, give it an old-world electronic feel, unlike most of my other boxes. with their more modern square led lights.
Sharp 9595. Not as good sounding as the Crown, but I like it as much with its green to red LED meters, digital FM with memory presets, solid metal look , and brick weight.

future fave list:
sony cfs-77. Currently a basket case, someday I'll bring it back to life!

Requiem Æternam
aiwa 880.... nothing comes close imho.
why would I choose the 880 over the m70.... well its better sounding... maybe not quite as loud... has soft tuch logic controlls and dolby.... none of wich the m70 has...

well if a m70 counts as a midsize box then my answer would be as many have stated.
in someways i kind of think of the m70 as the ac cobra of boomboxes.
the m90 would be the king cobra.
the m70 is extremely loud for its size and man does it ever have a nice radio reciever for a boombox.
