Lately was invited on some new JBL PA speakers demo. We were a few fellow dj's and the strange thing - we preferred a different line of speakers depending on the music we were playing. I mean the difference was'nt so huge but there was some :hmmm: . For example techno and tech hose dudes love the one series, the guys whit more commercial music other. It was sort of wired and nothing official and totally non scientific. Same about techno - we are preferring PA plastic molded style speakers, the classic music dudes - marble/wooden hifi speakers and so on and on......
So all that made me think - can we have different and wrong for one and perfect opinion for another about the same boombox :hmmm: ? Was hearing a lot of bad things for some boxes and discovered they are not so bad and vice versa. So how exactly we are deciding which boxes are best and which not so good :hmmm: . Is there some truth in my thoughts :hmmm: . Why i hate turning "wide" and aka systems, always prefer "stereo" and even "mono" over them. Im finding the bass have a lot better response on "mono" and "stereo" instead of any "wide" effects. On cold paper that should not be true, but still exist.... And why i find that all old warriors play best old electronica and disco, or thats just because i was playing that back in the years ..... And about the different technical worn of the boxes.... And the quality of the playing music. Im sure why i prefer LED boxes -any mixdude know how much the leds are helpin for beatmatchin the music. But any HIFI dude will kill for nice needle VUs. And last to give one example - Hitachi TRK 9140 is not so big deal box for a lot of collectors. But for me is one of the top 5 for some real deep bass. Even when im switching all my boxes together it sounds like subwoofer whit ''loudness" on.
So is there any chance that we put our personal opinion about boxes depending on the type of music we love?

:agree: 100%

There are boxes made for hip hop, made for rock and so on.
For example I would say the Lasonic trc 975 is a straight hip hop box simply because of its punching bass.
Then the Sanyo 920 is not so great for bass but crystal clear in sound - perfect for realistic audio like audio books etc.
But the are also allrounders like the Conion C100

I think the more kinds of music a box can play, the better it is and the more it is seen as grail

I never knew the TRK-9140 was any good......it always looked like a cheap POS to me, with small speakers. I'll have to try one out.

When I rate boxes I listen to them with several different types of music. I like jazz, hip-hop, r&b, funk, and electronic funk...even a little soft rock and old school metal. I prefer a well rounded boombox that can play them all but there are boomboxes of mine that play certain types of music better. My Sanyo 920 is perfect for playing jazz...especially on the wide setting, it sounds beautiful. My TRC 931 excels with heavy bass tracks, my M90 is well rounded enough to make any kind of music sound good. My Prosonic PQR 9962 is another great all around boombox that plays everything well. So there are definitely times I prefer a certain boombox depending on the type of music I plan on listening to.

Believe Reli, it is amazing and really well build box.Looks and feels like military equipment . Even the speakers are hard connected and no hanging cables around. Im amazed how those small woofers are kickin so hard. Just saw it in live in Dessau and decided it is a "must" for me. And now love it  . Best ever Hitachi IMO. And you'll be amazed  . They are going still for not so big cash. Really underrated great box. .Think they made it like one piecer in mind just whit option to can take the speakers apart - they have huge metal locks (taking the sound from them too) and feels monolithic like one piecer. And this bass... :breakdance: . Really close behind Tele M1. But for me the LEDs are wining. For the needle VU lovers there is a 9150 - thats real look after the customer taste. Respect to Hitachi for that. Wish there was M1 whit leds too, M90, 777 and so on and on....... And strange - its not a big deal to produce both types :hmmm: . Just c100 put both in one box ,which is really ugly IMHO and i prefer the corean version.
Ok it was a lot :eek:fftopic: . Sorry  .

Melly's point sounds really good - trying whit all kind of music and picking the box depending on the music mood in mind  .

Very interesting thought! :hmmm: :hmmm:

I do feel that classic disco and 1st gen hip hop sounds best on late 70's, early 80's radios. Modern iPod radio's sound cold to me. No depth when you play those same generations of music.

Cool subject!
