:-D When I see this I like to bid until I get in between their top two bids, of course the danger is you top both if they bid just pennies or a few dollars apart. This has only caught me once or twice but it wasn't a problem because the Item was good and the bid wasn't very high, the evil fun I have abusing these people makes up for it.

So you're the one. :-O

i do that -- always when we have any one of our own member boxes listed  :w00t:

 I've done it for members on occasion too. :-D
So you guys shill bid for the benefit of members?

When it comes to members selling to non members on eBay I guess you could claim that but it's by no means a coordinated effort.
If the high bidder has only one bid then no I don't push or I'd end up buying a lot of items I don't need. This is only in the cases of someone entering multiple top bids which is not illegal by any means but I just find it annoying, it's a personal problem I guess.

I avoid all of this for myself by simply bidding my max in the final seconds, if the bid is high enough I win and if it's not oh well I move on with no regrets.

:agree: BBB, there have been some pretty good buys this summer and I've managed to get in on a few. Certainly doesn't mean everything is selling for much less all the time but there have been plenty of good buys.

What motivation does ebay REALLY have to stop shill bidding.... anything that drives the price up adds to their bottom line.
Absolutely! It's why eBay is always filling us with hints like, "Bid soon, so you don't lose this item." The fact is, bidding soon is the BEST way to lose an item! But it does one thing very well: it drives up the price. Bidding late (VERY late... like seconds before the end), not only increases the odds that you'll snag the item, but keeps the price low, since no one has time to submit repeated nickel-and-dime bids until they find one that tops yours. But we all know that already, right?

And I agree with everyone who's talked about multiple bids placed in the middle of an auction. Occasionally it's shill bidding, but mostly It's just newbies who don't understand the system and keep inreasing their bid to a point where they think it's high enough to keep others bidders from topping it. Dumb because a) it doesn't work, and b) it increases the final price for the winning bidder, whoever it is.

I agree but for the most part you cant always tell how many people watching are planning the same move and WHAM!!! in the last 30 seconds it shoots up even past what you were hoping to pay and you lose anyway... (this has happened on many occasions to me)

My rule of thumb.
Unless you have to have it and money is no object,
Bid what you are comfortable paying.
If you win you win , if not there will eventually be another.
If there is shilling going on you might not ever be able to determine that.
So I would concern my self with part 1 of my post.
Welcome aboard
