...have a rippled effect across their tuner scales (presumably from the glue JVC used to stick them on)?
It's one thing that's always bothered me from a cosmetic point of view on the M90...

Hi Scotty,

Yes! That is normal. Unfortunaley we have to live with it.

I was also very unhappy about that dial.

All M90s got that wrinkled dial plate look. It is due to the low thickness Al plate they used and also the glue application method besides where they used to stick it to the frame. Imagine if the glue is applied along a straight line on the rim of the dial plate it would have looked decent. Forget the glue, use mounting brackets and that would have solved the wrinkled looks.

Most dial plates got a decent guage thickness so that it looks very clean and in the same plane.

HI Alfie, Did you take a good look at it from far moving sideways with a reflected image on the dial plate? I'm sure you have done that but wanted to make sure.

That is when you see the defect.

See a picture of M90 with the wrinkled dial in the picture. It went for $2950 couple of years back.
You can see it clearly on the top right part.

See also another one with the wrinkled dial.

all 3 m90's iv'e owned had the same problem , i'm pretty sure this happens over time from any small amount of twist in the case when picking it up and setting it down.

When I bought my first M-90 way back in 83' it did have that on the plate so it's something you must live with.

It's still my favorite box.

Okay after a closer inspection there are the tiniest dents that you can only make out when you tilt the radio right back. I think mine may have had a fairly sheltered life.

I concur alfie.

The tuning dial on my Victor M90 is flat and smooth. :-)

Go!

Miles, We like to see pictures of it from 3 angles, one from the left corner, the center and the right corner. It is hard to believe they made thicker dial plates on Victor.

The glue JVC used shrunk and pulled the thin Al plate to the mounting bracket. This is the cause of the wrinkled look.

In most boomboxes the dial plates are mounted on either ends with screws. So, none of them had this ugly look.

I've seen the same issue with my Conion C100 F (Korea). The front plates with the controls are also pulled in where they applied the glue. One only notice this defect from far when you look at a glancing angle, the same way you look for defects on a car.

I can see how distressed and depressed this horrendous issue is making all of you fine, upstanding M90 owners so, in the spirit of true boombox enthusiast kindness toward my fellow human beings, I'd be quite prepared to take any unwanted M90s off your hands and better yet, I wouldn't charge anyone a single penny for relieving you of this dreadful burden. Naturally, I would destroy these terribly deformed old boxes in a humane and quick way so that they'd feel no pain nor any embarrassment at having let down their custodians so badly.

So come on guys, unburden yourselves of this problem before you need to see a shrink to help you through these feelings of shame and inadequacy.
Any takers?

Thought not, but a boy gotta try.

Great topic boys. As any of my fellow Wisconsinite members can tell you...my m90 is as clean and minty as they come. But yes...it has that damn ripple. You don't know how many times I've been gazing at its perfection only to see that unavoidable blemish jump out at me like a pimple on prom night. "Maybe nobody else sees it"..."I'll just tell people they're all like that"..."its just my imagination...its not really there"..etc. it makes me wanna scream sometimes. So glad to hear I'm not the only one who suffers from Chronic Ripple Frustration.

I've always wanted to avoid 'Chronic Ripple Frustration' so that's why I don't own an M90! :-P

Funny how my lowly JVC RC-656 dial is 'ripple free'!
