Distorted and low volume with line in on Hitachi 8190E

Hi everyone, I'm using a DIN to 3.5mm and the volume is very low and hissy/distorted.

This is both on the line in and phono switch. Could it be an issue with the switch or something else?

Thanks

Definitely could be but of course, it could be elsewhere.
I've never had one but that's probably where I would start.
You could work the function switch back and forth a bunch of times.
Then do it while you're listening to something on the line in to see if it changes while you're working it.

I've cleaned the selector switch and the line in/phono switch but same behaviour persists. Anything else is above my pay grade I think.

It's a bloody good job I enjoy playing cassettes and listening to the radio.

Spraying the switched doesn't always fix the problem . sometimes the switch has to be removed and taken apart and rebuilt once you do that then you can declare that it's not the problem and move on .
Sometimes it is the switches but some are almost impossible to reach the inner parts with the cleaner so they have to be rebuilt.
I have had luck spraying switches but it takes hours of flooding it with cleaner and flipping it back and forth 3000 times.

It is possible that your DIN cable is connecting to the Line-out connection, not the Line-In connection.
You can try to modify the cable to connect to the other two pins of the DIN pin (5 Pin DIN I suppose), if you can!
Or get a 4 RCA to DIN cable and trace out which one is Line-In correctly and connect to the correct line.

See this post to get an idea.

Maybe your hitachi dosent support real line in, or just as a monitoring function if youre recording a cassette. Set your radio on line, half volume (or a little more), powered on AC, not battery and touch the DIN pins with a needle. If there's a humming sound coming out on two pins (like youre unplugging a smartphone from the stereo, but the stereo isn't switched off- bzzzzzzztztztzzzzzztztztt) your hitachi is able to direct line in.
The same as the JVC M70 L (european- Din, but no line) and JVC M70 JW (USA and other countries- real RCA jack with line in)

You've got me thinking now. I'll try this, thank you.
