Ok, so I noticed today and speculated in the past about the Lasonic TRC-935. As you can see some of them have no plastic 3-leg support or black foam behind the speaker grill and you can clearly see the nice white speakers. :hmmm:

Here is Chris' picture of the 935 that Lasonic had:

Here is a picture of my 935 with the plastic 3-leg support and black foam in place:

I'm sure Lasonic didn't pull that foam out and the plack plastic legs, so why are these different? Are they really different generations of the 935  ? Discuss :hmmm: .

joe --not sure about all this --

but i think ?? lasonic --unlike the prime manufacturers such as toshiba, etc etc
may never has any of their OWN factories --

and their sub- contractors were from taiwan & korea and --all over the place --

so - thats why there are several variations of their models

So if I pulled out the foam and the plastic legs, it's no problemo then......

I just wanted to collect all the big 900 lasonics and thought I was done until I saw the 935 with the speaker showing behind the grill.

Hey Blu, I did see that too and have seen that in the past. I have seen the white speaker 935's and think they look great. But I'm with RBJ, I'll be leaving mine stock. However, I think it looks better with the white speakers showing through.

While at Lasonic I spoke to Albert (son of owner of Lasonic) and we talked about the super rare 951 and how you just found one and how I was super jealous! Albert said those were VERY low production quantities! So it's not that they are out there en-mass like the 975's or 935's, there just aren't ANY out there! Your a lucky man to have one!

DIBS!

I've seen a 935 that was missing the clock too, and had the 975's 'Jumbo' graphic in the clock's place.
Also, not sure if it intentionally had 'High Fidelity' on only one speaker grill. Seems odd for someone who owned it to paint over it... but just as odd as a choice by the manufacturer!

So there's at least one more variation!

Rock On.

Thanks for sharing that pic Glu - I never saw that one before :-O .

Chris, that is so kick ass that you asked about the 951 I have! I was wondering about the "rarity" but I forgot to ask before you went to Lasonic. Fantastic to hear that it is a rare box and for some reason out of all my Lasonics it is the one that was damaged the most but works the best! I guess it will be impossible to find a new rear case for this one but it is fixed stronger than it ever was in the past.

Honestly, the 951 (out of all my boxes) is really my favorite even over the massive Wheely. (not trying to rub it in).

ps, I only know of 3 Lasonic TRC-951s. Johnny's (no status on box location), mine, and someone on youtube posted about theirs..... crazy really

And, I agree the 935 with the white speakers showing is far more attractive than the "blacked out" screens :-/ . Oh well, just happy to own what I have  . Love it man, thanks for sharing all the info you were able to soak up with Lasonic :breakdance: :surf: .

I agree with the different ways of the lasonics being built by different outsiders because I had a few 920's with different internal boards ( tuner and amp) which could not be interchanged :'-(

I think they were surprised I even knew of the 951. I wonder if the case of a 935 is the same? Might be! I might need some 935 parts, I have been looking for a few things. If I come up with a case, I will let you know.

Lasonics seem to all over the place with production. I think, over all they were a lower production quantity run company than Panasonic and Sharp. Just trying to keep up in a packed market.

I too am happy to have what I have....

Hey Joe I think the 935, 951 and the 975 have the same rear case only difference is the extra opening needed for the 935 and 951 output RCA jacks which is already on the 975 back and just needs to be punched out

Spot on, RBJ!

Lasonic designed the boxes and had them manufactured at many different factories, the most recognizable being Yung Fu Electrical. Albert, the grandson of the founder, related as much when Chris and I visited Lasonic-land.

There's really no telling how many variations exist of a given model, because the factories changed frequently to keep up with demand, and with them, the parts and final configuration.

I don't think Albert or any of the current Lasonic leadership have ever seen a black 920T - they bugged when Chris brought in his actual silver 920 - so there may yet be a Lasonic configuration we haven't seen. :w00t:

I'm with MasterBlaster84 - keep 'em stock and collect 'em all!

Go!

and then . Yung Fu prolly had several factories in many locations -- :hmmm:

so, lets not call all these versions different ' gens'
--just minor variations :-)

it would be an exciting lifelong challenge -
for any of us lasonic fans -- to actually acquire every style
of every model :-O  :-O :breakdance:

Since we were talking about it, here is a little eye candy for ya'll:

I see now - not really different generations but just variations in production that are very random.

@ =ml=, they really freaked out about Chris' silver 920? Did you guys tell them about the white speaker version too? I would have thought they had at least a picture of everything that has gone out the door :hmmm: .

So strange. To honestly try to collect every variation of the main model #s really would have no end because you don't know when you are done looking! :annoyed: It would be fun though  .

PS - Chris, either you or I need to find a 935/951/975 parts box because we could both use stuff from it! :dunce: Yes, the rear cases are interchangable with no issues. Nearly identical pieces.

Totally agree, I know of the 920 (1983) w/ thick black grills, (1984) fine mesh grills then the 920T in dark blue-ish color, then the black T you are talking about. I guess the list could just go on and on.

I Love the idea of a life long chase. You could fill a wall with Lasonic variations! Of course you still have to find them, which seems to be harder then one would think!

Yeah, that really surprised me and I was so glad I brought the radio's for them to see. Albert seemed most interested in the 918. He really took some time to look it over front and back. Even the receptionist (OMG what a little hottie) said "Oh thats the one from the poster", meaning the 920. She had never seen one either!

I told them they could start collecting off eBay and James made a comment like..."Yeah, and try and bid against you guys, no thank you"

Prior to your thread on the 951, I had only seen a few pictures of this mythological box. I wasn't sure what I was looking at. Had never heard of it or knew it was even made. Lorn knows I'll probably never get one!

DIBS!

I also talked about Hemiguy's 975 restoration and how he used new Lasonic stickers and parts to bring it back from the edge. They were stoked to hear people were doing that stuff..
