figure out what I believe
is a ground issue on the line in.
It has a quiet low level hum when line in is selected that goes away when you touch the antennas
or any of the jacks or ground lug on the side of the radio.
Other than that I am very happy with it , and
i got a what I feel was a surprisingly good bargain on it.
Its like Norm said it would be very difficult to ever let go of a box like this!!!!
Hi Hemiguy,

Wow, nice box! Pristine condition, and the packing, the sender did an excellent job.

Hope this isn't waking up a too-old post, I notice you're still active so thought I'd pass on a tip to help you out:

The Hum you hear with the line-in, it appears when you select the Phono input, and if you ground the jacks with your finger it goes away. The hum is rather loud for a line in though, so I learned if you want to select the line input, make sure all 3 selector buttons (Radio,Tape,Phone) are popped OUT, so none are selected. The Line-in is direct, so none of the buttons have to be selected. You can even select one with a line-in and 'mix' the signals together.

If I may, to introduce myself, let me tell you about a mutual interest: Recently I found one of these Clairtone 7979 boxes myself at my local dump! Here's a pic:

Boy does it sound good! Not perfect cosmetic shape, but not too shabby, have all the buttons except one, amplifier works perfect. I'm going to print myself a cardboard copy of the aplique around the cassette door, then it'll look a whole lot better. Tuner is a bit intermittant, going to look for a bad solder joint. Currently debugging the tape circuit, motor ran at first then stopped, I've got it down to a couple parts on the PCB, wrote myself a mini-schematic of the motor power circuit. Be nice if I could find a schematic for the cassette circuit, but proud I was able to figure it out for myself.

I really like the full complement of controls inputs outputs etc. The digital clock with alarm is a nice touch. And yes, the touch-sensitive tuner knob is a very novel feature, took me a little whilr to figure it out, and the power plug polarity affecting it too. At very least I've got a real good portable amplifier with line-in, phono-in and 8" bass drivers, lot of noise! Amazed to find they're actually worth several hundred dollars, hard to believe.

Well, hope that helps Hemiguy, all the best!
