Every time I switch this baby on I am amazed by it's sound, especially with the loudness switch on. Beautiful led's, clean lines, fantastic sound, not too heavy you don't want to walk about with it, and all the necessary features make this the perfect box.
I have heard a huge variety of boxes in my time of collecting and imo this box sounds better than the m70. Having said this it still seems to have a number of hate fans, I really can't see why? Anyway regardless of this it will always be my grail and I would'nt trade it for even an m90 guys. If you have'nt got one or heard one then I suggest it's time you did

I've always loved the simple, no fuss lines on that model - Everything you want in a box really.

Congrats on your grail.

James..... :-)
Cheers James :-)

Its a little monster, waiting for my D8734, had one back in the day. What do you think of the d8734?
Yeah it sure is a monster especially sound wise  the d8734 is the huge 3 piece which I have owned also. I love the look of the 8734 and the sound is very good but not as good as the 8614 which is a 1 piece. Also the speaker clips which hold the 8734's speaker cabinets on are not the best and the speakers tend to move about a little. Still if you scored it at the right price then you should be happy with it. It certainly looks the part because of it's huge size. Hope you like it and be sure to hit us up with a full review

ah the d8614.like you say bro it has its followers, and it has its haters.for me im in the middle, dont love it and i dont hate it-the look is nice, the sound is awesome to say the least, but when these break they are a nightmare to fix-the old weak gear cog on the tape deck ruins it for me.still,i do have a d8778 that sadly is now scrap bro,and the cogs seem aok on it,so if ever the cogs go on your baby, let me know and ill save the cogs from the d8778  so its like this for me-
look-great
sound-great
build quality-crap
but would i buy another?at the right price hell yes i would
hope thats a good endorsement brother ;-)

I'm sure he must have shares in Philips :-)

It's a nice sounding box for sure. And it has a certain minimalist style.

Lol cheers guys, Andy i disagree on it having crap build quality mate. I would say the crown sz5100 is crap build quality and the 8614 is certainly above that  I think it is a good thing that it isn't built solid but still has the sound, i think that's what makes it even more appealing to me :-) that aside your review was very fair :-D Sorry Si I really don't have shares in Philips, wish I had lol I would have a hundred boxed 8614's then lol

I don't "hate" it, but I think it looks kind of boring. If I were going to buy one, I'd buy a Condor instead.

Fair comment Reli but the condor is only 5 watts per channel where the 8614 is 10 per channel. Also the condor brand is not a well known brand :-)

Eh dunno about that, has anyone taken both apart to see if they really use different amps? The watts they print on the box are rubbish. They probably meant RMS on the Condor and music power on the Philips

I'm only going off what I have heard here Reli, I do know for sure the philips is a respectable 20 watts max power

The D8614 is a lovely box! Sound is very good and the build quality is much better than a lot of other boxes. The only problem I can think of are the shitty breaking gears in the tape deck. Yeah, the condor is just a late 80's copy of the original Philips. It doesn't compare at all.

You're example does look mint system! I love it! :)

Yeah the cogs are shitty but I'm pretty sure every box ever made has some downfall. I don't use tapes often anyway so this does'nt really bother me. I thought the condor was a late shitty copy, thanks for the info Michiel and thanks for the compliment bro

OK I just compared photos, and I guess the Condor is not a true AKA, because the knobs and buttons are totally different. Even the eject button is in a different place.

I was hoping they had simply taken a Philips and changed the brand name, but sadly that doesn't seem to be the case.
