D8443 Drop-in Speaker Replacements?

Could anyone recommend a nice drop-in replacement to replace from the piezo tweeters in a D8443?

Also, would a Lasonic TRC-931 woofer be a good replacement for the D8443's center speaker? I read through this thread, but the question was never resolved. Another option could be to use a modern subwoofer.

Finally, is there a good replacement for the 5 1/3" woofers that could be installed without modifying the case?

I definitely don't want to throw too much time or money at this box, but simple speaker replacements would be cheap and easy.

You could use 5 1/4 coaxial car speakers , if the frame is too big you can trim the flange off with a pair of tin snips since these having clamps to hold the speakers down.

Thanks for the idea. That's a great solution and is exactly what I'll do. Would a 4-ohm 8" car subwoofer also be a good option for the center speaker? I have a line on a TRC-931 speaker, but since it's not technically a subwoofer, I wonder if that's a good idea?

I wouldn't really waste my time on the middle speaker because you don't have enough amplifier power to make that huge of a difference.

The middle speaker is where you really run into mounting depth problems because of the board that sits behind the speaker.

Thanks for the help everyone, I really appreciate it! That's a great idea to use a set of 5.25" speakers w/tweeters. Is it best to shoot for a lower wattage set? I'm trying to be frugal, so for example, there are great prices on Kicker 43CSC54 (rated at 225w though) and PYLE PLG5.2 rated at a more realistic 140watts.

Some of the cheaper entry level speakers get more efficiency per watt than the expensive ones because they are made to get the most out of evey watt. .the cheaper speakers don't handle that many watts but they don't need to because you don't have the power anyway.

That makes sense. I'll stick to a lower wattage set since I don't really need any overhead at all with the D8443.

If you look hard enough you should be able to find some speakers for this for about 20 to $30 bucks shipped. MAybe cheaper if you find a good deal

Thanks for the link, Reli. Those look nice and they have 92dB sensitivity, which is the highest I've seen in this size. Plus I like the white surrounds. Is 35 watts RMS too high though, or can the D8443 drive those fine?

What matters is how sensitive they are, and the ohm rating too. The watts printed on magnets is usually bogus anyway.

I must confess that I like my D8444 as-is, and my experience with stereo showed that better amps push lowly speakers (Naim SBLs in my case) into stratosphere... Anyone here managed to upgrade the amp in this box?

People are putting 2.1 channel Class D amps in them and bypassing the original amp. That would be very cool, but it's far beyond what I'd like to do.

Back to one of my original questions, is there a drop-in replacement for the D8443's piezo tweeters?

I do not see any space for drop-in tweeter here:

But with some plastic surgery, by cutting out the horn, Dayton PTMini-6 Planar may fit:

I don't see the need to remove them, just glue the whole thing down, looks like there's enough room.

But if you're installing coaxial car speakers, then there's no need for additional tweeters.

Coax car speakers would be the easiest option, but for me it would ruin the looks. Usually I pretend that it is Aiwa CS-880 and if played at low level it sounds almost decent ;-)
