I know that the 1st & 2nd Gen along with the i931 use the exact same woofers, not sure about the 3rd gen. That info came from Albert at Lasonic.

Sadly, I still don't own a classic 931 and have never heard the Crown or Unisef
We gotta find you a good deal on a 931, its a must have for your collection Chris

Agreed lasonic yet go for the 935 it far better than the 931

I always felt the 935 was the best of the 3 super jumbos, but never had a 931 to compare them all too

I've had all the large Lasonics ( 918,920,922,931's, L30, 935,975) except the 951 and still think my 975 has the best bass and sound. But then again my 975 was mine from new and I didn't beat on it at all. As for the 3rd Edition TRC931 with round corners it does have same woofers as all others but does not have same sound as 1st and 2nd Edition. I still say that all Boomboxes of same model sounded the same when new but depending on use through out the years, each one has a different sound now 😉. Most likely the caps have worn greatly causing this.

Quick question for the fans of Lasonic's TRC 931... its way better in build quality than the Crown SZ5100 i can see this because i own both.... but i read earlier that the SZ5100 was inspired by the trc 931??? Are you sure this is for certain?? or are you just guessing??

Best way to tell is find out date codes to see which was actually made first.

Without a delorean, neither could have been inspired from a future design.

Well Everyone for a fact 'knows'.. that lasonic's final release TRC 931 came out last of all.... yet this final version is the one that matches the sz5100 closest in feature layout and style.. the only real difference is the rounded edges...

look at the decals shape around the power button... its stretched on one side just like the sz5100..
Its obvious where lasonic got there idea's from.

If the SZ5100 had been released before the 1st gen 931 and the 931 was a copy-cat, why would they have needed several generations to match the look of some decal? Which don't even look very much alike and with the 931's being more elaborate from gen one on.

What we do know is that the 931 has been a very popular boombox due to its design, performance and fair pricing. It seems more plausible Crown copied the looks and but cut the performance to get even cheaper while feeding off the 931's popularity.

But all of this is just speculation. We'd need production dates to know for sure.

You do realize that the final 931 was released in the 90's right??

By which time the Crown sz5100 was no-longer in production...

Which means for a certainty that lasonic could easily compare to, and use any sz5100 design feature they felt fit for their re-issue..??

The sz5100 came out in the 80's... so how could they possibly have been the copycat's ????

The only part I don't understand is I remember seeing both boxes almost side-by-side in the store back in the day I bought one of those crowns and return the damn thing the only boom box I ever returned it and got the 931.

Usually as time goes by the boxes get cheaper which means I think the crown is a knockoff of the laSonic because by then the boxes were really starting to get cheap.

No worries it's cool
Check the above page...

I'll be back tomorrow with my 931 serial no..

Peace, Stedly
I honestly don't believe there was any copying from either company. As stated in your page the mid 80's bling started with Black, Chrome and colors. We had not only lasonic and crowns but helix and discolite and many others. Most of them with dual cassette decks and colorful decals.

I don't understand anymore... you were comparing the 1st gen of the 931 to the Crown... now you're comparing it to the 3rd? Maybe I missed something.

But if the 1st Gen 931 came before the Crown, then it would be more likely Crown was influenced by Lasonic, but changed some stuff to make it "Their own."

If you're thinking the Lasonic came out first, but then switched it's design to copy the Crown, I'd bet it would have been more like "Okay Crown, if you're gonna steal and change our design, we'll come right back, and still produce an better radio."

Bro, don't know if you're joking or you're serious but either way, some members here aren't gonna take kindly to your brand of humor or the way you present your opinions as facts. Lasonic is an iconic beloved brand in the boombox culture and although it may not be everyone's favorite, it's well respected for their contributions to the culture. If you feel other wise that's cool just make sure you keep it respectful. Just my 2 cents. Peace ✌️
