Hey guys.
Well, I'm about to graduate my bachelor's degree program in industrial design, and my suddently I felt like making a quick mock-up of a concept boombox for myself haha. I've posted 2 pics, and it is rough right now, but I would like input.

Tell me what you like, what you'd change, and what would make you excited if you saw it for real. I'd love to make it sometime.

Specs:
10" woofers
3.5" mids
1.5" tweets in wide horn boxes sort of like M70's.
Centre space is for iPad docking.

I originally had 8" woofers, but who am I kidding haha. If you think 8's would be better do say so. I could put slim 10's and it would reduce the weight a bit. The box is 6" deep right now, 32" long, and 17" high.

Nice concept!

Are you using CATIA? Because I hate how the perspective is F%&/§ up in the second pic....I know our CATIA does that always

No, I use SolidWorks for now. Yeah, the perspective is off, literally, there is a box i have to tick to correct it :-P .

I actually wouldn't dream of making it without dual antennas. I really don't like seeing large boxes with a single one, like some of the lasonics came.

I was re-thinking the ipad thing, and could shrink the centre to fit only an iPod or iPhone. Perhaps that would be better? More people use those I bet, and I don't even have an iPad to be honest haha. I just liked the large touch interface.

Thanks for the comments so far guys, I was starting to get worried nobody liked my idea haha.

Very cool. I am jealous of you, Industrial Design seems like a cool field. Friend I know got a job at Whirlpool after finishing his ID degree.

I would encourage you to use thick speaker rings that stick out from the box, and deep long-throw woofers, kind of like the Crown 850. This provides the perception of depth and power, kind of like deep-dish wheels on old muscle cars.

Another idea would be to put the mids inside the woofer grills, like the way Sony did it, with those chrome support frames that hold up the mids behind the grill. The more chrome the better. Or polished aluminum.

Have needle meters at the bottom, like a Sanyo M9994. And LED meters up above the tweeters.

love your concept and your very clean front face --

DONT waste your time and materials and 100 or 200 hours ( + or -) of hard work
on common 8 " woofs -
after all that work --it justifies no less than 10s !!!
the legend is serious .

Good tips Joe, and I'm also glad you liked how clean I made it :-) . I prefer minimalism, and so my work reflects that.

Now, Reli, I took your comments and applied some of them to the design. I haven't put meters or anything in, but did alter the speaker arrangement and look to go along with your suggestion/request.

What do you think of this, version 2?

It still has 10" woofers, 3.5" mids and 2" tweeters, but it is shorter now. It can also still dock an iPad no problem. I rendered it in a more normal colour scheme, and then in one that accentuates the tweeter garnishes to the max. I forget which boombox already does this 2-tone. Anyway I recall a few do it, but without the boldness of red that's for sure heh.

Comments/suggestions/requests welcome. This is a boombox design for myself yes, but I would love for everyone to think it represents their taste to some extent too. An updated classic I hope to achieve.
Enjoy,
eric

i prefer the top design -
but with only the cool red trim around the woofs --

lose the red on the woofer center center

imho ;-)

and for your separation and sound stage --you need to move your tweets
toward the outsides

I like the exposed screws in the woofer trim rings. I would suggest making them even more pronounced and recessed. I'm a big fan of "rugged" speaker rings, with fake rivets. It makes the speaker seem more powerful.

I would also suggest making the trim rings "multi-plane" with edges in them, to catch the light. Hard to explain.

As for the tweeters, I was thinking of an asymetrical swiss-cheese support frame, like this Sony CFS-77

Hey Joe, here's one for ya:

Ya I had an idea of what you meant, and actually imagined that little Sanyo i think with the triangular tweeter suport thing, very similar to the Sony you just posted. The thing is that driver in the middle is a 3.5" mid, so it has a magnet on the back larger than what tweeters have, and I'm not sure it could clear the woofer cone as it gets closer to the edges unless I pushed it forward or dug the woofer deeper. I guess only working with the actual components could help me be 100% certain. I just dropped it over the centre as that's probably where the most clearance area would be especially when those woofers move.

I can play around with it though, that's not an issue :-) .

  :agree:
----------------

and please keep us/me posted re your 10" woofer search --
as i am planning to install 10 inchers in an m70 --
and with a 29" wide outer wooden cabinet to accomodate the bigger woofs

thanks

I would prefer the Radio dial at the bottom with a minimum of 10" white woofers with chrome dust caps, tweeters and mid range all seperate. We want to see the dust caps on the woofers in action!

It should have both LEDs and VUs :-D

Tuning is so convenient with the wrist down for old folks like me

A monster form of Akai AJ500 :-D with the speaker face at a slanting angle.

Ok, so i was talking with my dad today, and he gave some input as to what might be a cool boombox and thus another concept was born. This one is leaning more to the TDK/Tron style but still retains:
- 10" woofers
- 3.5" mids
- 2" tweeters
- 32"x16"x6" dimensions

It has an acrylic sheet over the front with holes for the mids and tweets. I tried many tiny holes but settled on single holes for each as the tiny ones looked bad. The woofers are behind the acrylic and those 2 blue holes between them are the ports which fire out the back of the case so the woofers don't blow off the front haha.

The blue is glowing yes, and could easily be changed by the user to be on/off, or other colours. It would use rechargeable battery packs to give it the power needed and better useage.

On the top in the little glow box area under the handle is the iPod dock.

Cool? Not cool?

This blue is amazing. Clean lay out as well. If your gonna put the iPad in the center, do you have the option to put the iPad sideways? I have the eQu app on mine and it would look friggin sic with the dancing Eq. If I where looking for a boomer and looking for specific things on it, it would be the following:
8 or 10 inch woofers with the mids and tweeters set up like the CONION C-100f's
7 band Eq or Bass and Treble tone controls
Loudness function
Stereo wide
Extra inputs/outputs
If possible 20+watts so it can spank all the M90's out there (M90 lovers can boo me now  )
Remote control. 8-10 D batteries a must for long play!
I'll be your first customer if this gets made. SO DIBS on this ok

I'm thinking the iPad could be built in to the box, as not everyone will have one anyway. I'd wager that more people have the iPhone or some kind of smart phone, so that can dock on the top in the provided square. The iPad would run the eg etc on the front case, filling the void in the centre. I can get a used one and take it apart to mount flush in the front without much trouble I suspect. Yeah I hope to build a prototype eventually, just have to get some things out of the way that are more important. The rendering is fast and easy tho so no harm in fine-tuning it before I build :-)

edit*
The concept above actually had no iPad provision, it was just a clean front with the speakers and iPod doc on the top. Ofcourse there would be a button or 2 but I haven't figured out good placement yet. The iPad thing is a good idea, but I just thought it would look bad being used unless there was an ipad mounted in it so that meant people without one would have an ugly box.

So wait, the woofers are completely covered by acrylic? I dont' think that's going to work. If they were true subwoofers it might be OK, but the woofers on boomboxes produce a lot of the midrange as well as bass. So if you block them off, you block off a lot of volume.

I like the "light from within the box" idea though. Definitely need some VU meters though. I would suggest a pair of round meters, kind of like old VDO automotive gauges, backlit with blue light.

Hmm Reli, good point.
I don't think walking around with two 10" subs is the best idea haha so they would be normal woofers, and then you're right I would lose sound. I guess they will have to have holes too, but then will need protection.

Hmm. What would look best though in this techno theme? Bars? a mesh? bars built in to the acrylic?
