Capstan motor always on

Yes, each of two capstans has huge and heavy flywheel, made of steel, some 45mm in diameter, 14mm wide, although belt is only 6mm wide. They are indeed flywheels. Perhaps that is why they have to be in full speed in advance, because they need some time to achieve it. Otherwise the capstans would start a bit later than reel, with increasing RPM and that would be bad. One is completely passive, but the other one has plastic gear which does move parts of mechanism in certain positions.

BTW, shame for Nakamichi, I've read recently that they were sold to some neverhearof company or something like that, which will now make cheap appliances using whatever was left of legend.

Classic Sony electronics -great when they work, super difficult to obtain success on repair, although not impossible.
