bad news, got outbid on the hitachi and aiwa but currently watching a nice sharp gf-4343, hopefully i'll have better luck with that

That is a nice Hitachi, not extremely powerful but a good sound at low to moderate volume. They have a great look and feel to them so yes get it if you can.
The Aiwa is the CS-W220, this was made after the the decline in the classic boomboxes of the early 80's had begun but it's still a fairly decent mini if you get it cheap enough.

sadly i got outbid on all three boxes i mentioned, internet decided to die at the last minute of the sharp auction so i missed out ¬__¬ will keep looking on ebay though!
