its was a 'wasteland ' because tons of unruly trespassers had been trampling that sand dune for decades -
ALL the protective seagrapes and natural plants has been destroyed -
it was all just sand with nothing left to hold the sand there -
without some ' structure ' --dunes get blown away or washed away
