Are FM transmitters any good?

How do FM transmitters compare with Bluetooth receivers in sound quality for wireless connection between tablet, phone,iPod etc and a boombox? Obviously if the boombox has no line in then an FM transmitter is the only option, will the result be better or worse quality than the regular FM radio stations and will the transmitted signal remain stereo?

I’ve tried a few and had good results. I’ve even got one that connects to your iPod with Bluetooth then transmits on FM. Quality is good

You need to buy a good quality one for good results. Something like this:

Yours worked GREAT out at the Vegas meet and at Venice Beach.

I'd love to find a nice portable one to take to the meets. The one I have is "ok" for home use, but I need something stronger but portable for meets.

Fergie i have this one, its a little pricey but you can find it for less and it is fantastic. They dont advertise it but you can open it up and adjust a little swivel to lower or raise the transmit power, i have kept mine quite low but i can use it anywhere i n the house oir garden no probs :D

That one looks more suitable and its battery powered as well making it more portable.

The CZE-7C has a cooling fan suggesting it has enough power to broadcast to every house in my street. If so i'm sure that would not be legal here.

Yeah and I would not want to be in the same room with it. Probably get cancer

Just spotted that the CZE-7C can be switched from 7w to 1w transmitting power...just a mild migraine LOL.
Seriously though I may look again at the CZE-7C.

The instructions say not to be in the same room with it. I would take that seriously

I have one & they are excellent! Full stereo & need to be in a different room as signal very strong - harmonics spewing everywhere on the FM band & definitely not legal in the UK these wipe out everything on FM except the transmitter itself!! Sound though is really good!

Oh & the claim is a 15 mile radius if you are up high enough using just the telescopic aerial!

Yes, the 7 watt setting will SMASH local stations. Back in California I could obliterate "Real" stations up to 5 miles away. So I could see a 10 mile radius.

The only real issues I have seen, like you mentioned, is if the radio's are to close to the transmitter it will feed back or if it is at ground level it doesn't get good range. I also tried using it off a 12v car battery and an inverter at ground level and it didn't put out.

My best results were on the 4th floor of my house (here in Italy) and it penetrated *gigity* all the way to the basement and for miles around. I spoke to an equipment distributor in the UK that sells optional antenna's and I was told that with a better dipole antenna mounted on a pole on the roof, that I could get some serious range.

If your in the US, the 7 watt version in any city is illegal. You can't step on any revenue stations, have any cursing or sell advertising. If your in the country and there is some open frequency, your good to go.

My Crown CSC-850L likes these transmitters - Superb stereo separation & sound quality! The tuning needle goes off the scale even in the far reaches of my huge garden here  For what it cost me it was easily worth the money & if I lived up high I would love to try it out just driving around to see how far it really went!!

This is the FM transmitter I acquired a few years ago and it still serves me well several times a week. I have an old Philips mini in my bathroom that I bought as 'disposable' for pennies, bathrooms can be humid & steamy so an old mini is ideal. Before I take a bath or shower I set up a vinyl LP, CD, mp3 source or whatever to listen to. I use the same frequency (select any FM frequency you wish), it's easy to set up, the 2 x 'AAA' batteries last for many weeks (rechargeables will not last long) and it can be used on any audio unit with a headphone socket. The illuminated display will dim after a short while to conserve the batteries.

Although I'm unsure of the range of this transmitter (it's raining at the mo so can't test outside just yet) I use this when playing vinyls or CDs to a BB in my garden but I can carry out a 'range test' when the weather is dry if any member would like me to do so.

It's a no-fuss, easy solution for about £10.00 (6yrs-7yrs ago).

I just bought another one of these CZE-7C ($48 delivered). I will find another location in the house to put it where it won't get so hot. Not up in the little room near the roof. I'm certain that's what killed my last one, it overheated and stopped transmitting.

It's kind of like the rechargeable batteries, kind of a must, having 75 radio's and always trying to figure out a way to get what I want to hear through them is a PITA. Being able to listen to all the radio's at once playing MY music! That's what I like!
