I know what you're saying Chris! I still can't believe I found a kerbside vintage one piece box, let alone a GF-9696!

The old Sharp was only 24 hours from going into the crusher. Imagine how many vintage, working boxes with only minor and fixable faults have been destroyed!

I think the elderly couple were pretty happy the GF will live on! :-)
Totally man, you know when a cassette deck stops working, it's beyond the scope of 99% of people to be able to fix it. So to the curb it goes.

As asked above, are you going to show it to the people after you restore it?

Did you tell them you have a sizeable collection and you did restorations?

Can't wait to see where this all goes

Excellent score! These Sharp's were made to last, that's for sure.
You rarely see a 9696 or 9494 that are hammered beyond repair.

Hope you get the parts you need to make her 100%, Jimmy!

Rock On.

Yep, I did mention my Boombox collecting and repairing hobby. I'm in the area every day of the working week so it wouldn't be a hassle to drop it by when I'm done - they'll probably want it back! :-)

This restore will take a while. Although she'll never be a mint shelf queen, due to the known history and the unique way I discovered this one, it's going to be a keeper/user box. With all the cosmetic 'issues', I'll certainly feel no angst in cranking this one hard outdoors!! As such, to facilitate future long cranking sessions, I think it's only fitting that this box get the full treatment including a possible re-cap, full deck disassemble/lube etc.

I've got parts to find too and that can take time. I've been giving the old girl a fair bit of use of late and her performance is improving all the time. I haven't opened her up yet. Fingers crossed it's not too much of a mess inside.

I'll do my usual detailed restoration thread with before and after pics - I think the pics will show a pretty dramatic difference on this one.

James.... :-)
