I've never heard a D8514, but I agree with you Arron regarding the sound of the D8614. When I bought my D8634 (the same box behind the front details, as you know) it was the by a very long shot, the single best sounding box I'd ever heard. The continuously variable stereo control (available on ALL functions may I add - not just FM radio like so many boxes!) combined with a super-responsive loudness switch (which acts on both bass AND treble - not just a bass boost like many others!), certainly make it one astonishingly good sounding piece of kit! A better sound than MOST boxes, for sure.systemaddict said:Had an 8514 a few years back and it's not far behind the 8614 in sound quality and power. It's quiet unbelievable how good these philips sound in terms of weight ratio, great score![]()
yea have to agree close to the d8614 if it had a loudness button would be very close, but once again the 8614 still offers more, haven't heard the 8634, but seen photos and looks powerful.systemaddict said:Had an 8514 a few years back and it's not far behind the 8614 in sound quality and power. I could'nt of put that better myself Luke, the d8634 I have also had and the sound on that one too is truly amazingRetro Addict said:I've never heard a D8514, but I agree with you Arron regarding the sound of the D8614. The built-in mics pick up sound perfectly, and on cassette playback it gives an excellent level of detail and stereo separation, an true eye-opener when you first hear it properly. The D8614 / D8634 have been blessed with very good electronics and speakers. Very under-rated boxes. Total respect for the Philips designers of the time. That's my tuppence-worth.

The d8714 is a beauty Reli, it's been on my wish list for a long time, very unique looking beautiful boxReli said:Philips is good quality for sure......I just got a D8714, the silver elephant, definitely one of my best-looking boxes
Just starting out, wish I had kept all the boxes I had back in the day, the late 70s and 80s boxes are the real deal, they just don't make them like that anymore. To me their a thing of beauty a real work of art. I was on eBay and saw my old blaster the Philips d8734 in good condition and thought it would be nice to have that back again, since then I bought the 8614 and thought why not just start collecting, but its starting to become an obsession lol Im up to 7 now and still searching, not only into boxs, love the old amps and systems from the 70s 80s, bought a nice pioneer sa608, love the silver finish with the big volume knobs, now looking for more of them to. Once I get all my grails will upload the lot be good to share with you guysJT Techno said:You are getting some great boxes monerme69 - you have similar tastes to me - silver and chrome 80's boxes from what I see - are you a long term collector or just starting out?

^^ totally agree, and unfortunately / fortunately (delete as applicable) there is no cure for this obsession and addictionmonerme69 said:the late 70s and 80s boxes are the real deal, they just don't make them like that anymore. To me their a thing of beauty a real work of art.
I said the 8514 was close to the 8614, but I think I may have to retract that comment after today's experiment its no way as close, I have to say the 8614 handle's ever kinda music better with ease, blows the other two boxes out of the water. Going to buy another and do do something real radical.systemaddict said:Sweet set up monerme69, I think you'll agree the 8614 sounds best, closely followed by the 8514..... and the big 3 piece at the bottom sounds way below par for the sizegreat pic they look in fab shape
