As I wrote in an earlier post, I'm looking for a JVC M70. Couldn't find any on ebay, so I was wondering what could be an alternative Ghettoblaster. I want a classic boombox with a great sound. But so many look great - and I have no idea how good the sound is.

Hints appreciated.

M70s pop up every now and then on ebay Germany. But you might also consider to buy one on ebay US, as they are far more common over there and have proper line-in. You might get one for the same price as you'd pay here even though shipping costs a lot extra.
The GF-9696 is as uncommon as the M70 and probably not cheaper. The GF-9191 is a neat box and sometimes sells for little money, but most of the time not really.
Despite not looking very exciting the Philips D8634 sound pretty good, comparable to the Crown CSC-850, and shouldn't sell for too much.

Well, "lloking exciting" is important, too, but thanks for your answer. Sounds like a real M70 will be worth the wait.

Do I understand right: German M70s usually do not have Line-In while american M70s have?

Good to know, I think I would love to use Line-In.

One more question:

If I buy a M70 in America, will I have to pay taxes / custom duties? Anyone knows where I can find some info?

The Sharp really looks great! Maybe I'll go for that. Thanks.

Yes, the German/European version only has Phono-in and a DIN input but I don't know if the DIN input works like the cinch line input of the American version.
The M70 is worth the wait, it's loud, sound very good, looks classic, is built well and great in portability (handle and strap). A member here sells replica straps which I would definitely recommend  The M70 will also last veery long on batteries even though it puts out some strong sound. All in all the M70 has little to no weak points.

About the taxes / custom duty. Yes, you will probably have to pay some. You'll have to pay 19% vat (MwSt) on anything above 100€ and probably another 10 or something percent customs. It's hard to find any clear information on the internet as the whole custom duty system is pretty confusing  If you're lucky you might be able to convince the customs guy that the boombox you got is old, worthless and was a present from someone you know over there. Then you won't have to pay anything.

An M70 is definitely worth the wait. It is the best midsized boombox made and it is my favorite all around boombox. A couple of very good alternatives would be the Aiwa 660 and Lasonic 920. The Aiwa 660 is the same width and a little taller than the M70. It has excellent sound and very solid bass thanks to the DSL. At normal listening volume the sound is very comparable but at higher volumes the M70 is much stronger. The Lasonic 920 is identical in size to the M70. At lower volume The 920 has deeper bass than the M70 up to about half volume, after that the M70 crushes the competition. The M70 strength lies in its powerful amp. It has a very warm and smooth sound that stays consistent up to notch 9. You won't find another midsize box like it but those 2 come close.

What will you be using it for? Indoors, or outdoors?

Outdoor? Get the M70

Indoor? Get an Aiwa 660, 950, 950 or 990, they crush all others in making precise, accurate sound, great Wide setting, and decent low-volume bass.
