i have not put much in terms of photos up for a long time.
i thought i would take a bunch of photos today of pretty much all of the boxes. the robo disco is tucked aways someplace. i didnt bother with my new kaboom but pretty much everything else big small is there.
does it need any introduction i guess not i mean its probably one of the most well known jvc blasters and i was lucky enough to grab this not to long ago.
its pretty much complete except for the battery cover and a chrome bit. not perfect but good enough for me and its just a great box all around.
next up is the most recent box i found.
a 1977 sankei stereo 1000 and its not a huge boombox but is a really top quality early box. side firing speakers and really well made. the tuner on this box is really impressive. i guess sankei was in a different phase of its existance in 1977 when they offered this box for 300 dollars us.
this box is heavy for its size perhaps the heaviest box for its medium size i have.
its not bass monster thats for sure but the sound of this box is extremely good.
its a keeper and at present hooked to the sansui amp below it and sees regular use for playing tapes. it is just really nice and well made.
alot of people call it ugly but when this came out people were all over it not only for how it sounded but also for its looks. amazing how influential the shape of this ultra futuristic blaster was on the portable stereo market.
you can call it ugly but i rather like its design. remote controlled and as i say fantastic sounding the dt707 is a classic for me.
it might not be a box but back in the early days of techno and rave music i am sure these fueled many a dorm rooms night of fun.
the surround function on this box is really neat.
one of the many free boxes i have been lucky to obtain over the last few years. the jvc m50 sat for years in a storage closet at the wifes work.
nope its no m70 and yes it does not have amazing bass but it does have great sound. biophonic very good radio reception and really nice looks.
this was most likely the box most people left for back in the 80s after the sticker shock of a m90 dropped their jaws and made them think maybe their paper route wasnt paying them enough.
this citizen box came home with me after i saw a add for a old radio for 20 dollars on craigslist. its big nice sounding with decent heft. you can see some am fm shortwave and a decent casette deck. nice sized woofers . i love the looks of this blaster and despite its size this unit only takes 8 d cel batteries.
it can get quite loud despite only being a 8 d cel box.
nice looking sony monobox. has a very good radio that can dx competently good shortwave reception. this mono box is really very well made with nice trim and a great radio.
my sanyo m9998k was one of the first blasters i found when i began to collect them.i picked it up off the shelf for 7.99 plus tax. i learned alot from my experience with this blaster after being charged 90 bux for someone to spray some control cleaner into the pots.
lol.
i dont mind much if the tape deck is not working i use this box quite a bit and despite its age it still works very well.
sound from these are warm rich and thick. really a great radio. i kind of think this is a one piece box that sounds a lot like a three piece due to its design.
i am not sure why but the pc8 by yamaha does not seem to get much love. maybe its the fact it is almost as nice sounding as a pc550 but just not quite. bass shy some might say but i kind of think it sounds excellent as is. maybe its not going to thump as hard but when it gets up past the half way mark it sounds balanced.
yup the tape deck on mine expired and these boxes have a phono line in but still lhey are excellent and a bargain when you consider what you can find them for.
this box is huge and heavy. i have been lucky to own two of these now.i sold one and then found another a couple of weeks later.
pioneer sk95 sits above a early panasonic platnium series unit.
interesting contrasts between two 1980s units. one thing about boomboxes is the extreme variation in design and looks.
the panasonic three piece offers interesting speaker design two ohm speakers. digital tuning and great sound.
the elegant pioneer above it can be turned up all the way without crapping out but its not super loud. that being said it does sound really good.the pioneer is one of my gems its pretty much brand new.
i really love this pre egg sony mini. you know this box uses a lot of metal in its construction. the handle folds down in behind it and it also has a alarm and timer. i think it is also the smallest twin ariel box i have. it also is the smallest box with a digital tuner i have and memory location presets for the stations.
the quality of this box is miles ahead of what sony would soon produce.
i dont think jvc could have made a more different box from the m70 than the m80. the m80 is ultra hi tech with its digital tuner and logic controls for the tape transport. its sound is also really different. this box can get loud but not in the thick dense way a m70 can. its fairly heavy and fairly bulky. the speaker grills
cubist design cues here to the max. the tuner indicator leaves you limited to a led that goes under a numbered strip to give you a general idea of where you are at. very decent shortwave reception on this box. i wonder what the selling price was compared to a m70.
little pansonic with great sound panasonics ambience not a puny blaster when you feel the wieght of this guy. really great looks and sound that almost treads into some of the nicer mid sized blasters output. panasonic made this blaster extremely well back in the day. this lil blaster obviously has seen a lot of use the edges on it all have that rounded off look of something that has been handled thousands of times . suprisingly enough the tape deck and the radio itself all works very well.
another free for me box. to my best knowledge this unit is infact a toshiba that wears a viking badge. it has very good sound falls short of a m70 in terms of build quality and sound quality but does pound out a meaty loud sound. this box has really nice looks viking was sold through the long gone eatons department store chain that was once a canadian icon.
another look at the sk95. i should have taken off the grills for a shot the blaster really takes on a different look with out them. some people are not a fan of the fancy speaker grill treatment on these units but for me they are part of what makes this a very unique and nice blaster.
the tuner indicator is also extremely cool .
sanyo c7 is pretty much brand new condition. this heavy unit does not lack when put up against a similar priced jvc three piece from around the same era.
i kind of think of these boxes and this series as the last stand for sanyo. as time moved on sanyo seemed to fall apart in terms of performance and quality.
sad really but in some ways its what happened to all companies .
i do have a softspot for a well made mini. this sanyo with its pearl white finish and blue accents really glows and sounds pretty darn great. shortwave great am fm autoloudness and stereo wide make it a really full featured unit that takes up very little real estate.
after i sold my first jvcpc550 i got i regretted it well earlier this year i was lucky enough to come across another one. recently the belt went on the tape deck but it is in really great shape over all. there is a lot of things i could say about this unit that have already said. for me its one of those units that offers a big full sound. you can feel confident hooking up a good turntable to this box and getting decent representation of what was recorded . it might not get wildly bassy but the way the bass rolls off is musical and not overly colored.
flashy looks heavy construction i think i know what jvc was aiming for with this unit and that was most likely at the hi tech units sony was pumping out at the time.
one of the later platnium panasonics. dt690. it was cheap so why not one of the last great blasters maybe. good sound not as good as its predecessor and i also dont think either is anywhere close to the 707 but sound is in the ear of the beholder i guess.
