Hello, few days ago my collector-friend came over to my place and brought this nice piece to my house.

At first glance it looked quite horrible outside, dirty, speaker grilles were rusty and worn, speaker cones looked dirty and one cone even had bird **** on it. Both antennas also look quite bad, rusty from outside, left antenna has broken end, right antenna is missing. Previous owner (not the collector) didn´t take good care of it, taking it apart proves it. It was dirty inside, some spider webs and leaves. dirty and full of grime.

Most of screw posts are broken and missing sadly, hate to see it. Used a brush and vacuum cleaner to remove dust, used some household cleaner with alcohol to clean inside casing, washed the front panel under shower, now it looks way cleaner than it used to be.

Still there´s lot to do, radio works perfectly in both channels, but cassette deck doesn´t appear to do anything at all. When i turned it on for first time, i heard something electromechanical moving, but that was all. No movement in deck, motor doesn´t spin at all. I need some help here.

...to be continued

That´s it for now.

Keep up with the good work!

I have the same model! Radio working itself is a great thing to have!

This model is very rare!

Nice machine you got there, mine looks bit more rough, but now it´s cleaner. Any help with cassette deck, possible reasons why it doesn´t work ?

Thanks in advance

Mine got the same issue! Cassette won't power up. I am yet to work on this. All other functions work except the cassette. I have a AJ525 and everything works on that one. I need to learn from the 525 and see what is wrong with the cassette part.

It's nice to have something to be doing at home, in this cold weather.
Good luck with the restoration. ;-)

Thanks for kindness, yep, as you have lot of appliances and devices you have this shortage  This white one laying on my desk is for testing my devices, you can turn it off with a click when something should go wrong. ;-) I still think about this tape deck, how in a lords name should i get it back to work ?

Also, buttons are missing from those photos as i will take it apart over and over again, no need to snap them on and shortly after this put them back. Function button also screams for DeoXit, but i have plenty of this magic liquid :-D

I'm still learning, not an expert by any means but I'd begin with some quite simple steps. I do things one step at a time to keep it easy.

As a first step, clean whatever needs cleaning! Front & back, pinch roller, head, record head, spindle and everything else you can see.

Now do a visual check, looking for broken parts, loose connections, bits of old belts or 'foreign bodies'.

Follow this with a manual check of all moving parts to ensure they are able to move/slide/rotate/depress etc. as they should and there's no breakages or anything missing. Examine the idler tyre condition. Be gentle, more cautious than adventurous!

Lube or service as needed.

Once I've established free movement and find everything moves as I think it should, I then fit belts and double-check all the movements are still doing what it is they're supposed to be doing.

The next thing I do (caution required here with electrical safety) is re-fit the deck - without reassembling the whole box - and, if everything still moves as it ought to & the deck buttons function correctly, test with a tape.

I approach the whole job with a curious mind and take plenty of pics prior to stating, at every stage, and from every angle just in case!

1st step- check
2nd step- check
3rd step- check, will check again :hmmm:
4th step- check
5th step- can´t check it out as it´s all electromechanical , all cogwheels though move around, if i can get to the belts i would love to replace both of them, they look alright but just in case. damn those engineers, no proper ways to remove back plate of this deck
6th step- no can do, as 5th step doesn´t work out :-/
7th step- oh i wish i had a great camera
