A personal grail that I had been searching for was finally found on ebay. Mind you, this boombox is definitely not on anyone's list of must haves. It was my Dad's boombox that he kept in the garage and we would listen to it for countless hours while we worked on 2 of his hobbys, re-stringing tennis rackets and repairing touring bicycles. The boombox in question is a Montgomery Ward 3994A. It is a small boombox with 5 inch woofers and 2 inch tweeters. It has good stereo sound on the wide setting and aux input. I figured the price would not be very high and I won with a $22 bid. The boombox was fully functioning and appeared to be in good shape.
When the package arrive I immediately knew something was wrong because the box he put it in was smaller than the boombox I remembered. As soon as I opened it I found out I was right. He forced it into the box at an angle because that was the only way it would fit into the box then he tossed some crinkled up newspaper on both sides. The boombox arrived cracked, with the tuner scaled and led scale popped off. I plugged it in and thank goodness everything worked ok. The cracks were on both edges just above the tweeters but appeared repairable. I contacted the seller and to my surprise he admitted he knew the box was too small but packed it in there anyway. He apologized and refunded me the full purchase amount including shipping and said to keep the boombox as a gift.
I repaired the cracks, sanded and painted over the damages and repainted the speaker and tweeter grills. I reglued the tuner scale and LED scale. here are the before and after pics...
