As a follow up to my RX-5150 traveling tape thread (viewtopic.php?f=16&t=5262&p=70657#p70657) I thought it might be interesting to see if there is sufficient interest in starting a Boomboxery Traveling Tape.

Here's how it works: A traveling tape starts off with one or two tracks recorded by the originator (in this case it would be me who supplies the tape and kicks this off) who then gives or mails it to the next member in line who will record a track or two onto the tape and then mail it to the next member.... That goes on unitl the tape gets filled up with music. Once full, the tape goes back to the originator who started the project and provided the tape....

The Boomboxery twist on this is that instead of using a component tape decks for our recordings, let's stick strictly with our trustiest Boombox or Walkman (if you have one that records) to make your recordings. You can pick whatever track and audio source you want, just make sure you use a boombox or walkman to record onto the tape.

These projects can take a really long time and require members who are reliable and will follow through. Therefore, I respectfully ask that you please don't sign up for this if you know you are unreliable and likely to drop the ball.... You will end up with people mad at you.... LOL! Also, I ask that members make sure to only use boomboxes that they are relatively confident will not eat the tapes. If you're not sure, test on one of your own tapes first.

So, with all of that said, anyone who's interested should please let me know here and tell me your city, state and country (if not in the USA). All this will cost you is some time, effort and a little bit of postage.

Once we have 10 members or so, I'll organize the list based on geographic location, let you know how many minutes you have allocated for your track (or tracks) and we can get started.

In the event we end up with more than 10 participants we can do multiple lists and we'll do "regional" tapes, so don't be shy! :-D

I'd like to participate. But the question I have is how do we all get the end product? It would kinda suck to be the second or third person cause there isn't a lot of ammo on the tape yet. You get what I'm saying? But it sounds like a cool idea.

Good point about the people at the beginning of the tape missing out... that's the only real flaw with traveling tapes.

Someone did propose that the tape maybe be mailed back in reverse order so those at the beginning of the tape can hear the rest... Not sure what everyone else thinks about that, but if that happens then you end up with the people who were at the end of the tape getting it again and only having a few newly added tracks to listen to. And that can increase the project's turnaround time dramatically as well. Plus, those folks may not be interested in dealing with the expense of mailing the tapes again.

I propose the following solution to that dilemma:

When the project is finished, I will pop the finished product into my Nak and convert the recordings to digital files which will be posted to a file sharing site for our members to download and burn to CD or mix down to tape. I'm a member at http://www.soundcloud.com, which will even support WAV files for those of you who don't like compressed MP3. I was also thinking that we can also ask Fatdog to load the recordings into the online Boombox so it can be played here. (any objections to that Bobby?)

So, are you in?

Okay, we've got 14 total participants... It's time to get started!!!

But first, I want to thank those of you whow sent PMs with additional questions, scenarios and suggestions. As a result of those, I need to first announce a few updates as to how this is going to go down...

For staters, there will be two C-90 tapes instead of just one, and each person should limit their recording session to around 12 minutes. That gives us enough extra time to account for some inevitable "overage time" and maybe for a few more stragglers to join in... If the last person on the list ends up with some blank tape at the end, maybe he can record some extra tracks, local radio or whatever... But having two tapes allows for much more flexibility that we wouldn't have with just one making the rounds.

The tape I've chosen for this project is the JVC AFII C-90. I picked the JVC AFII because I have had really good success recording with these in the past and find them easily on par with with the latest Maxell XLII and TDK SA formulations. These tapes are capable of excellent recordings. Plus, since JVC is one of the few companies that made tapes and boomboxes it just seemed like the right choice.

There will be a RECORDING LOG that will accompany the tapes. I ask that each participant please jot down what boombox they used for their recording, as well as the title and artist of their musical selections, and add any comments they wish to share about the recording source and signal path. For example, did you hook up a turntable to the box (or record player built into it like on a Sharp VZ) or did you use line-in from your home system, or did you record from another boombox, or maybe you decided to use the tuner from that same boombox...? Just add whatever details you can so that we have an idea of what we're listening to and how it was recorded. There will be 2 recording logs, one for each tape.

Addresses should be shared via PMs only. Do not post physical or email addresses in this thread. When you are finished recording and ready to mail out the tapes, please post a thread here and send a PM to the next person on the list to ask for their address. This will help us track progress and allow me to update the list below when the tape is on the move.

Down the road, when the tapes find their way back to me, I will:

1) Post a scan of that log in this thread.
2) Convert the analog tape recordings to digital formats and load to soundcloud.com or a similar hosting site so our participants and members can download or listen.
3) Fatdog has also agreed to load the MP3s to the online boombox :-D
4) And finally, I offer to dub tape-to-tape copies of the tapes to any of you purists out there who specifically want an "ALL ANALOG" hard copy rather than a digital download. I have a sizeable stash of lightly used tapes that I am willing to donate to the cause free of charge, I just ask that you at least reimburse me for the postage. My setup for making dubs consists of multiple well-tuned Nakamichi tape decks plugged into a Sansui SE-8X equalizer. I assure you that this setup yields outstanding tape-to-tape copies that are very true to the source and will not disappoint.

NOTE: Since posts can only be edited within the first 24 hours, this list will be updated continuouly via new posts, not via updates to the first thead post as originally stated.

Without further ado, Here's the "ordered" list that we will be working from.

(BOLD TEXT designates who has the tapes, and BOLD ITALIC text designates who has already finished their recording and passed them on to the next recipient)

From the looks of things, the tapes will be literally making it around the world!!!! In theory, the tapes should cross the Gulf of Mexico, the Pacific, the Atlantic and maybe even the Indian Oceans, with stops in four of the seven continents! I'm jealous!!! Do you think we can pull it off in 80 days??? :-D

Alrighty-then! I'll get started with my recordings this weekend and then get the tapes to Juan.

Thanks to all of you for your participation! I'm really looking forward to seeing how this goes and having some fun with it!

Have a great weekend and keep boomin'!!!

WoW!!! Cool I get to send it to BIG GLUE!!! And also I can testify that the JVC is a GREAT tape!!! I have one that JaeTee recorded and it is crispy!!! Can't wait to get them!!!
