:agree: but after thinking about it, the i931 I used to have started to distort after 34 (the volume tops out at 40).

But anyway, my most distorted box is my Aiwa CA -100C... from ANY volume setting.

My Sanyo M9935K distorts badly, but it's because the volume pot is farked up. :-/

so this is my experience with the most distorted boomboxes...
anything made by mtc jij candle has not given me any degree of nice sound.
i am sure there is exceptions but these have been the worst brands for sound to my ears.

the box i have that really is a huge let down for sound was the huge samsung mono tv boombox i recently got. while it looks cool it does have perhaps the most horrific sound of them all.
it sound like two skeletons doing the wild thing on a tin roof.

Ira/Mono..ha ha my GF500 does`nt even have Bass Or Loudness,it only has tone, but whats a tad stoopid about the cheaper sharp boxes, they have auto loudness intergrated with the volume, and thats the problem that makes them distort..my RX5600 was distorting to hell, but i changed the woofers last night, now its alot better..

All of mine are pretty decent in that respect, but I guess the Hitachi TRK-8190 is the one you have to be most 'careful' with in terms of volume level and bass / loudness settings.
It's fairly bass-light but if you dare to turn up the bass when you're over a third of the volume then it's 'farty' speaker time.
It's even more pronounced distortion if using line-in and a really dynamic digital source material.

And loudness, only at low volumes (but that's what it's intended for to be fair).

In spite of the above, it's a great sounding box. :-)

In many cases that I've seen like this, the performance was greatly improved by a general tune up so I'm not entirely convinced that they were "made" to distort like this.

well honestly i can remember a lot of boomboxes that came with terrible distortion.
i mean i can remeber being kicked out of a lot of department stores up here for turning them up loud to try and figure out which were cool and which were not :-D
some of them really did come from the store with bad sound out of the box.
you are right tho. recapping some of them would make a difference others probably not so much .

:agree: with bill haha funy you should mention it bill but i used to do the same and tried countless amounts of boomboxes before the final buy and your right some used to sound terrible out the box :-)

My low end ones don't distort so much as to sound like more of a shrill shriek. My killers I can run just about max but at that point I'm driving the amplifiers into clipping, which in turn cause distortion. :-D
