1 m70 never a fan for sliders for volume the tricky power switch
2 m9998k the unfortunately maze like construction that makes replacing the belt like some kind of chinese finger torture puzzle.
3 the sony fh7 digital tuner is great but trying to find your aways around the frequency range can be a bit of a pain in the butt.
4 pioneer sk95. awesome box great tuner super nice deck but the fabric on the speaker grills allthough nice begs to be ripped at any given moment.
5 the kaboom. shape of course if only this could be the same shape as the m70 or even the ct900 for that matter.

of course our favorites have a habit of changing from time to time.
but these are the ones getting the most love here right now.

1 Lasonic TRC-920, love this radio to the MAX, mine is affectionately called the "Epoxy Box". It showed up damaged thanks to UPS and I glued it all back together :-/

2 Sharp GF-777z HEAVY, HEAVY, HEAVY. Even on rechargeable batteries that are half the weight, it's SOOOO HEAVY!

3 Victor RC-838. This radio is solid packed with parts. I need to open it up again to clean it, but I'm dreading it!

4 Lasonic TRC-918, I hate the LED's at the bottom.I wish they were above the cassette deck like the TRC-920

5 GPX 880 "Louder Blaster" project....NOT DONE...so I can't play with it!

I cant bring myself to this table to draw flaws on my favorite boxes. I enjoy them 100% for what they are.

sorry Bill!

Vey thought provoking topic Bill!

I'll give you four instead of five, and they all have the same flaw that irks me:

Lasonic TRC-931, Lasonic TRC-975, Vela DiscoLite and J7 Super Jumbo: NONE of them have a battery level meter.

I really hate not knowing when the batteries are going to pack up as 9/10 times it happens halfway between walking somewhere.

Of course this isn't issue for ones I don't carry around. It's the only thing that I consider a real flaw in any of my blaster's designs.
Doesn't make me love 'em and lug 'em any less though!

Rock On.

Not top five, but the Sharp GF-9000 and VZ´s would looks so much better with dual antennas.
I think it´s a must for a big boombox.

And I dont like the black dust caps on white woofers (Continental 20-20)

TO TRUE GLUE!

Last night, I took the 935 to a friends, I had thrown in some rechargeable batteries and was using them all day, with no Batt Meter, I couldn't know when they were going to die, sure enough, we are stilling there and the amp starts cutting out! HOW EMBARRASSING!

I plugged it in and we rocked on....BUT STILL

Yes! And the Sharp 8989, imagine that with twin antennae.

My Crown 5100 - No line in / aux facility whatsoever..

Pioneer SK-353 - 'Tone' only - In its defence it does sound very nice regardless.

can't really think of 5, but for the few grails I use regularly.

The GF777z. Think it has too much bass for it's own good. Distorts way too easily.

The Big Ben. Almost too much emphasis on the Treble. Actually have to turn the treble down less then zero.

The M70. Volume is too loud in the lower end, and when you slide it passed 5, doesn't get much louder, just distorts.

The M90. The tuner is not a good as some others. Could just be my example.

The FH7. Since the tuner doesn't have preset. You have to hold the tune to go up or down. If you listen to something at 93.x, it takes forever to get back to 107.x

Guess there was 5 I could think of

Here are five things I would change about my five faves...

(1) M90- I would give it more low end, Kaboom type, bass. It would then be the perfect box!!...and I would add a tuning dial light...and a "Wide" setting just for kicks.

(2) M70- I would swap out all of the sliders and replace them with rotary controls (the Sanyo 9994 controls would be perfect)

(3) M-X920- I would give this beautiful sounding machine a bigger amp. It sounds great at any volume, it just isnt loud enough to use as an outdoor box. (I am talking M90 type volume)

(4) Rising 20/20- This box was blessed with the perfect looks. It is classy yet flashy enough for the streets...problem is the amp and speakers are too weak. The speakers are rated at 5 watts! An amp and speaker upgrade would immediately turn this into my favorite carry around box.

(5) Kaboom- Everyone who has heard one knows of its amazing bass. Add a set of M90 quality tweeters and this box would turn into a world beater. I feel this is the only thing missing in an otherwise deep and rich sounding box. Of course putting all this in a square boombox wouldn't hurt either.

In closing I must say that truth is, I love all my boxes just the way they are, but this is a thought provoking topic...nice one Bill... :-D

...is your M70 a "C" version?...my "C" version has the same problem but my "JW" versions do not and they have a linear volume band all the way up to 10.

Sanyo M9990. Has aux-in, but no switch. Instead, the tape deck has to be in "record" mode in order to hear anything plugged in. AAAARRRRRGGHHHH!!!!

Panasonic RX-5150. One LED VU meter for both channels. Really???? Minor issue..., but still?

Sharp GF-9090, 9191, 9292, 9494, 9696 boxes. Phono, but no line-in. Must use an attenuator accessory. I'm not sure about the 9595 & 9797.

M90. very minor issue... no light for the tuner window.

Hi Jaetee-Yes both 9595 & 9797 have line in! I have both!
As far as me-It's dial ights!!!! More,More More and need GF-series with stay on features!!
Only the 9797 is special with stay on & night light!
Also the 9990 thing is really annoying-I agree Jaetee!
Need more Line-In's on some boomboxes other than that just keep on buying to get all the features you want!!!!
Buy a 100 or so and you will be boombox content!! The you get the best of all worlds!!
Just kidding soem are better then others/
Oh one more thing-I wish more boomboxes had better tape deck systems! Some just don't like Rew. & FF!!
Have a great week-GB. :-)

Yeah Melly, it is a 70C. Weird eh. The M90 is a C too, and it doesn't have the same problem?

...the "C" is setup for Canadian voltage, which explains the boost in power. The actual usable volume on both versions is the same, the "C" just gets there at a much lower setting. I only use my "C" version outdoors because it gets VERY loud... :-D..the "C" M90 is louder as well just not as exaggerated as the M70.

Canada has a different voltage? I thought they used 110 just like us.
