I FINALLY stumbled across something worthwhile in the wild!

BACKGROUND: Three months ago on a complete whim I walked into a pawn shop and found a pair of Technics 1200, a low end Stanton DJ CD player, cheapo mixer and low end Sony headphones, all packaged in a turntable "coffin" style roadcase for a ridiculously low price. Granted, everything was really dirty and I didn't have time to test the gear, but the price was so low that I could not pass up the deal. Plus, they let me put the lot on layaway. To make the payments, I must go to the store.

PRESENT DAY: So, I'm in the store the other day, standing in line waiting to make my payment and I overhear a conversation between an older gentleman and the store manager. Basically, the manager told the guy "I'm sorry sir, but that unit is simply too old for us to purchase from you. There just isn't a market for those anymore. People want ones that they can plug an Ipod or other type of MP3 player into and it does not have a CD player."

At that point I glanced down at the item in question and could only see the back of the unit and that it looked like some kind of 3-piece box. But my view was obscured because of the people.

As the guy turned to leave disappointed, I got a look at the item and it was a pristine Sanyo C-4!!!!! :w00t:

Needless to say, I stepped out of line and followed him out of the store.

As you can imagine, now the box is mine. :-D

It turns out the tape deck works just fine, and it even has the original papers and was loaded with 8 fully charged D-cells! I was able to test it on the spot!

Here she is!

Nope... no tackling required! I just asked him what he had there and he told me it was his son's radio. And that his son was going to Iraq and needed to clear some things and get some money together. He said he paid over $250 for it back when it was new and was pretty much just hoping to get what he could for it and then he asked me to make a fair offer.

Not really "needing" the box and remembering that I was there to buy other items I really didn't need either (I've already got a good pair of 1200's).... I initially told him he should try selling it on ebay as there is a collector market for old radios like that. But he said time was of the essence and he was not too web savvy anyway... He told me that if I know about such things, maybe I should buy it from him and sell it instead. He said if I didn't buy it, he was going to basically go from pawn shop to pawn shop until someone bought it. So, we agreed on a price and went our separate ways! Win-win! situation for both of us.

The ironic part of it is that it does have an aux-in and you can plug a CD player, MP3 player or whatever else into it.... The store manager must have just seen the tape deck and lack of CD player and the buck stopped there.

Not sure if I'm going to keep this or sell it at this point. I'm more into classic one-piece units, 3-piece units are not really my style.

I think we all dream of encounters like that. That's cool! :surf:

:agree: I thought I was in that exact situation a few times only to be dissapointed.
This is the kind of thing that makes collecting fun.

Yeah, the 3 pc boxes don't give the same feel as a true 1 piece boomer. They almost seem like the wrong vintage (decade).....

Congrats John!

And...for those of you who feel the component is of the wrong vintage...well, that just leaves the best engineered and best sounding for us who can truly appreciate the engineering and dead serious quality of the high end ones versus the high end one piecers. I love 'em all regardless. :-D
