Worst boombox/egg you've heard or tried?

When we first got into boomboxes, we had to start somewhere, and in that time your budget probably didn't allow you to spend much, if at all.

That is to say, what was the worst (in anything) boombox or "egg" you've tested?

I've only had three boomboxes so far, so I can't really speak well for myself. But out of those three, this Sanyo U4S6 was the worst out of the bunch:
Sure, it got loud for its size. But there was nothing under 150Hz, and reception selectivity was sub-par. However I'm sure mine is nothing compared to what y'all have in store, so lug 'em on out!:-D

What a great thread idea.....i will start in saying the m70 is dreadful and so are some eggs i have bought....they just have a soulless sound but i think you win in this category, the only boxes that could be worse are mono boxes lol

I have to say in my humble collection I have a Yorx BP-04R and it has the crappiest sound I ever heard from a boombox. I don't blame the size of the speakers because I've had smaller units that sound superior...but this thing is a pant-load of sound.

There are alarm clocks from the 70's that sound better. I bought it strictly for the novelty look and function (detachable walkman)3x9gjkR.jpg
This is not my image. My Yorx is stuffed in storage...

The RC 838 no matter what I tried it still sounded like crap.
Same with me. But that might be because the bass and treble sliders had broken internally and didn't do anything anymore. I assume that means the EQ had no bias plus or minus, but I don't know.

I've just bought a Sony CFS-2000L, only a small box but sounds quite 'tinny' with hardly any low-end at all. Thing is we all hear differently, so what sounds good to me, won't sound good to somebody else.

Im with Floyd and Reli never liked the sound of the 838, at least it was only £10 so i guess i passed it on, jvc have made some turkeys along with some outstanding boxes

Well, now I've got the only thing that would be worse than my "Japanese" Sanyo U4S6 (which I have since sold)...

...A Sanyo Monobox with a tiny 2-½/3" Wide-range!!

Talk about being a winner 8-)

Alongside that, it also came with four other (much better) boxes.

Surprisingly, this 'First' unit (despite having a tone control and graphic equalizer and lights!) sounds pathetic. 'Extra high bass' means mids:)

The only thing going for it - apart from the lights (which only come on when it's painfully noisy) is it's very light!

Had a Sony CFS 210 way back in the day. I loathed that little thing. My brother and I each had one. Life of being a twin I guess. I suppose it was ok for it's size but I hated it.

The second we got a lil money from mum we combined it to buy a Sharp WFT380 that we shared. That was a nice thumpiful beast.

I bought another Sharp in a fit of nostalgia a few years ago, after finding myself here trying to identify it. Bought my brother his own as well.

My JVC RC-727 is hands down the worse sounding box I’ve got. Still love it though.
Agreed that the original sound is not good. The one thing the box got is an good tape trsansport.
I like to be able to use all of my boxes, so the RC-727 needed an sound upgrade. The early Hitachi tba810 amp chip is not good, can't handle any current, and got limited voltage swing. The power supply is weak and the speakers got an undesired mid-range peak. The solution is to change to the latest ST-tba810 amp (from late 80s?), correct the boot-strap circuit by adding an 100 ohm resistor on the back of the pcb, change output capacitors to 1000uF, add 2200uF cap to the power supply and add some acoustic dampening. After the upgrade the sound is more than ok, if you not playing too loud. Of course the rest of the ciruits needs to be in good working order.DSC_0377~2.JPG
