I was at my boss's new summer house on Lake Winnepesakee yesterday, getting ready for his big bash this afternoon. He brought me to the shed, which had not been opened in several years. He pulled this off a top shelf and asked if I wanted it, knowing my fixation with blasters. I took it, thinking it would be a decent parts unit. It was so dirty I couldn't even see the board through the vents. When we finished setting up, I brought it home (2 hr. drive), opened it, blew it out with some canned air, plugged it in, and expected nothing. Plugged it in and every function operates flawlessly - even the deck! Good thing, cuz I don't really feel like taking on a project right now.
I've kinda wanted an early CD unit, so I'm gonna hang onto it. This one's going on my desk at work.
Lousy phone pic, but I'll post some better ones in the coming days, after the clean-up.

I'll be making the drive north again in a couple of hours. He'll be interested to know that it's a fully functional unit. I'll be visiting many friends in NH and MA on Friday and Saturday, as I journey south.
American members, have a great 4th! :beer2: :drunk:

Thanks, Bill. For a minute I thought about leaving it as-is just for the character. Then dead ants started flying out from the air blasts.
Should clean up really nice. I'm listening to some BLS on CD while I type this. Think I'll throw on some Beastie Boys as I fill the coolers. Not exactly a "Bass Machine," but a good example of an early verticle CD player, so it's perfect for the office - Line-in, too!

I finished the clean-up yesterday. This wasn't a complete restoration by any stretch, but it's mechanically and electrically perfect. It's also got some serious battle scars. I like it on my desk but I'm going to need a shelf. It's a legitimate business expense - I swear. :angelic: I really need every sqare inch of this desk this time of year.

It's nice to have tunes when I'm not on the phone, which is rare.

Thanks guys! I'm listening to Ozzy on cassette right now. This is that rare time of the morning (before 7:00 am) that I can actually listen to it.
I'm not sure the 20-Somethings here even know what the black box sitting on my desk is.
It certainly is a hit among the 30+ crowd, though.

Thanks guys! It's hard to stay focused when staring at the vertical CD player - h y p n o s i s .

I remember the first time I saw a vertical CD. It was like 1987. I was taking the Green Line downtown from Newton with my Nana and Papa. These two Spanish girls got on the train somewhere near BC, blasting. I've been fascinated ever since.

I also remember the first time I saw a vertical cd player. I thought "How can this be? disc's like records must be played laying flat".

Again, great score and great job cleaning it up!
