Windows 8.1 Haters Shouldn't Hate

Hey, just bought a laptop for a friend & was forced to learn a bit about Windows 8.1 for tablets etc. I hate the goofy interface that replaces the start menu & you have to right click on the 'Window' ICON in the bottom right corner of the screen to access the shut-down menu which is also goofy & counter-intuitive....

I plugged on & accessed a lot of hidden right-click menus & traversed the mixed up version of Win7 with a tablet interface they call the abomination that is Win8.1....

My point is, with my limited experience with 8.1 I was able to set the default windows start to the desktop instead of the tablet interface & also accessed the usual control panel, devices, applications, installed MP Classic, PowerISO, etc. so it's really not that bad, I found out.

As usual, Microsoft, in its infinite wisdom decided, once again, to mix things around & confuse the experienced Windows7/Vista/XP crowd & cater to the tablet & smartphone crowd.

User Account Control & Folder Options are still organized in a similar fashion but I forget where they were located...

I have a pre-release version of Windows 10 on a little touch screen Dell notebook. I love it. Just turned it into a dedicated radio logger/aircheck machine.

It's all about navigation.

Just watched the show called Nova and the documentary they had on PBS was called "Rise of The Hackers" pretty scary stuff.

Sometimes I wonder if all this tech stuff if it's intention is to make our lives more easier or difficult or for that matter **** up your life.

Yep, 10 is going to be the ticket. Most corporations have ignored 8, just like they ignored Vista. Not worth the trouble upgrading every 3 yrs when what your employees are using works just fine. Instead, they'll just upgrade from 7 straight to 10 and skip 8.

Prolly what I will do. Everyone I have spoken to hates 8 with a passion. Never touched, 7's still holding out

Yeah XP was the shiznit. When 7 came out they farked up all the menus in MS Office. Plus I am getting tired of 100 MB worth of updates every 3-4 weeks

Well, I understand the hatred & frustration with this confounded tablet interface being forced as the default but what I was trying to say is that it wasn't any more difficult to navigate & fumble around in Win8 vs Windows 7 or Vista from XP. Same with XP vs Win98 & on & on & on.....

There's still a user control, control panel, documents folder, public folder, device manager, etc. You can set the default view on start-up to your desktop & instead of the goofy tiles bull-carp, you can set your default app view to all programs in a list & icon view. So again, you have to get used to the next experiment in themes etc, but it's really just Win7 with an extra interface for tablets...not really the end of the world if you just slog through & learn again where they hid the real operating system & the options to go back to a traditional desktop view....

Windows7 is really Vista with different defaults & addons really but everyone hated Vista because it would ask if every user action is OK & you couldn't get anything done until you stumbled onto the user account controls & turned off the stupid verification software.

That's cool. Basically, that program is mostly doing the same thing you can do manually if you poke around enough to know where the usual windows stuff is....just a pain to relearn how everything is organized....

I use Windows 7 right now. It's okay. I had to install some programs to get some XP functionality back in it though. I hate that Microsoft never explored finishing out a really good 64-bit XP. I keep telling myself I'm going to try and get the only available 64-bit XP on one of my machines.

That being said, I am looking forward to trying Windows 10.

It's not a virus. I got that icon too & am waiting for the free upgrade. I'm pretty sure MS is offering free Win10 since 8 was such a brick with everyone used to Win7...

I have Wondows 7 on my mini laptop and it's ok,works fine.
I still love XP,I have it on my desktop tower computer and I never did the updates, keep it cleaned out every day and I run anti-virus and the darn Gateway tower still works and I bought it in 03' and it's a 1998 tower!! XP is still the best.
I have Vista on my main laptop and I don't really like it much but I have all my I-tunes on that so I don't want to put a new operating system on it so it stays for now.
I do wish they made another operating system as user friendly and as industrial as XP,it was and is a great system.
I've used 95,98,XP,Vista,7 but I'll stay away from 8!!😀
