If I leave batteries in my radio, will it kill them over time?
I have had batteries in my 975, my m70, and my gf777 all summer. I listen to them each several times a week and they are still going strong. I also only use Duracell. By the way, don't know if you have sams club in cali, but we do here and I can get a 10 pack for $11.24! Its a legit ghettoblaster pack! My 931x (the new ipod lasonic) DOES kill batteries when its not used however. I filled it up in june listened to it for a few days and then it sat for 2 weeks before I chose it again. I thought something had broken since it wouldn't power on and I knew that batteries were just put in. I plugged it into the wall and it worked! Hmmm. Ok it does have the digital clock I thought, and even though I couldn't imagine a few digital numbers sucking all the d battery power up so quick, I put in new batteries.
This time I thought I would be smart and when I was done listening, I switched the ac/dc switch off battery power and the clock went off. Fast forward 3-4 weeks as I was packing up to go to a party, I grab that boombox, switch to dc power, hit the power switch and.....nothing! Suffice it to say that boombox has no batteries in it. Maybe there is a glitch in mine? I don't know, just wanted to add what I have run into.

Here is a link to a review of many brands of rechargeables (Thanks to member Katsa for sending this to me in the Boom Room)

Wow! 12 Amp hours from a D cell is pretty impressive, but some 12 V boxes might** prefer a 12V supply rather than the 9.6V you'd get from a battery of those rechargeables. There are now NiMH rechargeables available that have a cell potential closer to the 1.5V of single use cells, I have some in AA size that I use in the B&O with D cell adaptors and in my Fuji camera. They're JCB branded and if they last as well as the tractors they make then I'll be satisfied.
It's interesting that the review criticises the Energisers for their being AAs in D sized shells. I use adaptors to achieve that very thing in the B&O and the RC-656 and with 3 Amp Hour JCB AAs in there, these still have greater capacity than any single use, Zinc Carbon Ds can achieve. The other reason that the claim is interesting is that it's untrue. ;-)

** "might" because some cheaper boxes lack the same quality of supply regulation. Hackers, Panasonics and some Grundigs will work perfectly when their batteries are discharged below 75% of new potential, but low end Crowns and similar generic sets that use bought in chassis across loads of club book brands tend to run slow as soon as their batteries fall by as little as 10%, so there'd be little point running NiMHs in those.

Good policy, just make sure to avoid the Chinese ones if you can. German ones aren't known for leaking and Canada also makes Duracells only we don't get those ones here so I've no idea whether they have a good rep or not.

Curved ball:

How may cells do you use in a year? Might Lithium Ion battery packs be cheaper in the long run? I'm getting a pair of these for my JVC PC-5 and PC-11, each one is the same size as one of JVC's original battery tubes and the pair can be charged off the job with my universal charger. They cost £42 for the pair but can be recharged up to a claimed 1000 times. Alkaline Procells (exactly the same as the copper topped ones, only the livery is different) are around £8 for a case of ten from eBay and last well but once they're gone, they're gone so potentially ( ), the Lithium ones can save me loads. Could save you a whole lot of cash too, Chris. ;-)

John, can you give me a link to these battery packs.
Cheers

NiMH batteries leak and discharged on there own.
Duracell has some low leak NiMH batteries that come pre-charged in the package.
I was using them, AA size, in a can opener and they do hold a charge for a long time.

Certainly Dave, these people: http://www.totalbatterysolutions.co.uk/custom-batteries/ will make up the packs to suit pretty much any existing space. The LA that runs the colleges with which I work is the buyer and I'm not sure whether TBS can sell directly to privateers on a retail basis but shy bairns get nowt, so I'd ask, after all, the worst they can say is sorry, you need to make a minimum order for several thousands of Pounds worth..

Thanks mate, that's interesting stuff.
All I had my head was an image of a laptop battery, now I see they make them to the size you require.
Thanks
