I recently bought a pair of sony sa5000 headphones of ebay (before i lost paypal) i belive these headphones reatailed at over $700 a couple of years ago.

Yes they sound GREAT but i sure wouldn't want to pay the full amount bass is good detail is great all in all i was prety stoked to get them and last of all i havn't seen a better build quality on any headphone having had phones like GRADO RS1'S wich i thought had a VERY poor build construction.

Any way i decided to dig out my old pair of technics ehax250 headphones to compare them against the sonys yes these are all plastic cheaply made headphones....... so i precided to plug them in after listning to what i thought was gunna be hard to match the sony sa5000.

plugged the technics headphones in HOLY CHRIST what a HUGE IMPROVMENT in sound all i can say it's like listning to a standard but good amp but then using a VALVE AMP the clarity etc is similar both headphones have great mids highs

But the bass is so much RICHER and WARMER on the technics it's UNBILIVABLE i beleive the technics were sold in the early 80's so this explains alot but at most i think they reatailed at £100. anyway just goes to show how much sound quality has gone so much down hill these days.......

...if you like the Technics, try a pair of Sennheiser HD800's...best headphones on the planet...their clarity and full range sound reproduction are unmatched by any other headphone...

Were the sony ones bought new?

if they were they might need a good amount of burn-in time before they develop their full potential.
Most high end brand new headphones need a few days or more of constant use to get them performing properly.
I thought this was a load of codswallop when I first heard about it, but I tested a mate's Audio Technica's before
and after the burn in and the difference in the warmth and clarity was very pronounced.

If they're second hand of course, then this is all for nought.

Hope it's the former and you can burn em in good and proper Tim!
That said though, sony's gear, like the old gray mare, ain't what it used to be.

rick is right ! you have to burn in new speakers using white noise and running a sine sweep of the full spectrum of sound through the unit for for up to 24 hours before you can judge the sound.

I Bought these second hand rick but Im REALY hoping the burn in process still aplies to these as i have read some reviews that they need a burn if for up2 200 HRS, failing that im not sure what to make of them.

Do realize that in order to get the best from these headphones that you really need a separate amplifier to drive these properly. Most higher end headphones have a rather high current demand in order for their diaphragm units to work to their full potential. This current requirement will not be supplied by the headphone out of an MP3 player or laptop and so an external amplifier is required in order to drive these types of headphones to their best. I'm quite a fan of valve based amplifiers and I really feel that a well designed amplifier can take many amplifiers from sounding dead and lifeless to sound alive and balanced.
