Why do people bid high amounts with several days to go?

Just look at bidding history, this isn’t an auction to take seriously. But I know what you are saying. I used to wait for last minute but 80% of the time. I either forget, get the alert late or don’t have the luxury of waiting for a long countdown. In most cases any bid earlier than 30 seconds provides plenty of time to be outbid anyhow so these days, I often place a reasonable bid and let the chips fall where they may, especially if it isn’t THE most important auction item in months or years.

Well I set the alarm on my watch or phone, and bid in the last 5 seconds LOL

And yeah, that auction is a bunch of "shill bidding" for sure. Notice two of the highest bidders have zero feedback.

He thinks he can make that radio look really valuable, so that the next time he lists it for a BIN of $1,000, people will think "OMG I better jump on this, it's a steal at that price!!!!!"

Turning a pumpkin into a glitzy diamond studded coach with some tricks? Who would fall for that?

How can you throw up one of the coolest excruciatingly-rare, boxes, with the box, and not want to talk about it? In this instance I do think the black version is a little better looking, the colored buttons pop a little more.

I bid early just to get it out of the way; I get too busy to check all the time and really don't use my phone for any internet activity.

Are you talking about this auction? Because it’s clearly a fake auction. I don’t think anyone would pay 3 grand (except 0 feedback fake bidders like on this auction) for something like this. As for rare, there are many ultra rare boxes out there that nobody has ever seen before and probably couldn’t sell them for a penny unless shipping was free too. Rare doesn’t mean a thing. Desirable means everything.

There are probably two school of thoughts with these auctions.
One is that it's not legit and is being bid up by friends etc.
The other is that people think that if they put a high bid in early it will deter others from bothering which very rarely works, or only works on some items.
I reckon a bit of both scenarios occurs but I'm with you Reli, why not just wait?

Superduper, treat yourself, don't cheat yourself, that Technics is one big bad box. There's a small set of boombox and Walkman guys that lust after the rare stuff more than the grails. A lot of this stuff is so under the radar that when it pops up, most people don't know what it is, and with limited to no information available they get forgotten.

As far as the listing, I just show it to my wife when she expresses discontent with some of my office fixtures. I agree though, the listing looks fake.

Yeah I’m not seeing that. I’m sure it sounds great. But it looks like a fairly standard technics 3 piece design. The leds are snazzier but this example boxed or not looks well used. So small following or not, I don’t think that box brings in that much money legitimately. If it re-lists then we’ll know for sure.

Welcome to the site Mudman. What part of the world are you from?

Lots of 3-pc boomboxes are true powerhouses, and with weight to match. Performance is usually fantastic on these types, especially if they employ STK and other ultra high powered amp modules. Yet, they don't fetch very much money at all, even when very minty. Could this one outmatch those? I doubt it, but even if it did, it wouldn't be by much and there really isn't any reason for this box to be worth that kind of money. It doesn't have exceptional looks either -- the kind that draws people to it. So maybe it's rare. But like I mentioned, there are rare boxes that nobody will touch, even when offered for free, I often see people have to "think about it." Would I buy it? Without the box, maybe I'd pay $100 for it. Is it the kind of box that warrants 59 bids? There once was a time when eBay auctions gathered that type of response by ill informed buyers who thought that their bid would be the last word, which lasted for maybe 10 minutes. Today, people either put in a couple of bids or just bid at the last minute hoping not to get outbid. No boombox type auctions today gets bidding frenzies like that unless it was a really highly desirable unicorn grail OR it is a fake auction. Anyway, if you look at the bidding history on this thing, the only bidder with more than 20fb bid $5 CAD. The only bidders with more than a handful of feedback bid $520 CAD. In this case, in my opinion, ONLY the $5 bid was legitimate and would have been the winner if all the fake bidders were removed provided that other legitimate buyers who were probably discouraged by the fake bidding didn't jump in at some point to drive up the price. The reason? eBay allows you to click on the bidding history and on the hidden user ID's, you can determine how many bids and how many recent auctions they bid on. ONLY the $5 bidder has a normal profile. The rest? They have ONLY bid on this seller's auctions, no other.

Shill bids for sure. 0 feedback bidders over and over. That seller is a piece of crap for thinking no one will notice.

Just in case an interested buyer googles this model looking for more information:

This is a Technics SA-C09 we're talking about.
That's right, a Technics SA-C09.
You heard me, a Technics SA-C09.
Technics SA-C09
Technics SA-C09
Technics SA-C09
Technics SA-C09

Hope that's clear.

And, while Technics SA-C09s are indeed rare, they aren't built as well as the SA-C06 or SA-C07. And those models usually only fetch $200-400.

I'm sure there's a reason for pointing out that this is a Technics SA-C09. Call me dense and maybe I'm not following this model, ,but I'm missing the significance of that. :hmmm: :dunce:

Anyway, the seller is a blockhead for playing games, thinking that he can scam someone into paying 2-3 grand for something maybe normally selling for $100-$200. Collectors know better and non-collectors, I can't see them falling head over heels for the looks, nor forking over several grand simply because it's a boombox. Like Reli says, maybe it's the game of desensitizing people into ridiculously high boombox prices, perhaps in an attempt to set a new normal. :nonono:

So that this thread appears in a google search when the buyer tries to learn more about that model
