Here's some Healthy Bantor:

I've sort of been testing the Music Search feature on my equipped boxes in my modest collection. So modest, in fact, that I only have four boxes with the feature: Panasonic RX DT-707, Conion C-100FF, JVC RC-M70, and Pioneer CK-3.

Here's a pretty picture to start :-) :

Well, I guess I really should have dusted the box before I shot that :dunce: , but anyway...

Here's what I found (Remeber, I only have 4 with the feature):

#4. Pioneer CK-3
  • Selectable up to three songs/tracks, FF or REW.
  • Needs a decent (3+ sec.) gap between songs/tracks.
#3. JVC RC-M70
  • Works well selecting, regardless of gaps.
  • Selectable up to 16 songs/tracks!
  • Cool LED indicating display.
  • Bulky to use. Really, it's main drawback.
#2. Conion C-100FF
  • As we say in New England: Wicked. Simple.
  • Works every time with minimal gaps.
  • Only selects one song/track at a time.
#1. Panasonic RX DT-707
  • It just works, man..Every time!
  • Again, wicked simple.
  • It may only select one song/track at a time, but it's soooo fast and responsive.
  • I love the mechanical sounds from an otherwise "digital" box.
That's my take. How's your Music Search? :hmmm:

I remember being so excited about auto music search back in the day. I'm pretty much a "line in" guy now, so I don't have much to add about boombox music search.

I also remember worrying about wear on the tape from music search, I'm not sure if it was justified, though.

As a kid, I thought Music Search was some alien technology from the future. I'm mostly a line-in guy today too, but to have a fully functional deck with the feature is one helluva novelty. It's an archaic technology that still facinates me. It's such a simple concept, yet 30 years ago it was virtually witchcraft.

Google has the best music search! I can just put in a couple of words and it knows exactly what song I'm thinking of! :w00t: :w00t:

:agree: :agree: :agree:

I was so blown away when I was a kid. But sadly, I could not afford a radio with this feature as they were so expensive.

I also wondered if the music search damaged the tapes??? Any one know if this is true. It just sounds painful on some radios where you can hear what sounds like SCRAPING.

Witchcraft indeed! :witch:

LASONIC........

Seriously, the 777Z is pretty good at music search but not sure what is the best out there....The M70 has the highest number of tracks selectable but you have to hold down the play button on the right side to engage the search. A bit tricky to master at first but is always seems to work well.

Cheers,
Cpl

Sanyo with 3 buttons and 3 LEDs music search
as it passed a song each light would go off until the they all go off and the song started.
The button-led combo is nice.

The JVC PC-55 or 550 both have 20 song search features...why on God's green earth I don't know but they do have 20 :-P

It's because they can, they're JVC. 'Nuff said.

The Sharp GF-555 has 11 but only on the playback deck. Two 555s would therefore have 22 in total and the product of this equation is that two Sharp GF-555s are better than one JVC PC-55. ;-)

I'm not sure whither Sharp has the best search system but what I am sure about is that they have the most acronyms for the same thing! APLD, AMSS, SWALK, NORWICH, IDST, etc.

I don't think I've ever gone past 4 or 5 on the M70. A typical 90 minute cassette has maybe 10-11 songs per side.
But if you ever need more, it's there.

If your listening to a Halloween sound track with 30 different effects, but your kid wants to hear the creaky door effect that is 3rd from the end...there you go! :-D

My teacher always told me I'd need math skills later in life....

@Lasonic...good point about the sound effect tracks.

My dad had the M70 and I LOVED the music search on it.

My stereo was a POS and although it DID have a crappy dual cassette, it did not have music search.

my toshiba rt/sx-1000 , has the most flawlessly smooth and quiet decks of any box i own ,as well as the ff/and rewind are the fastest of any deck i own ,hate to say it but none of my jvc decks can compete with the overall performance of the sx 1000 decks .it has no dolby or either , but works great either way.music search kicks ass too, fastest of any box i own.

I've heard you mention this about your 1000 before. I have never seen one in person. They sure look sweet. It's nice to know the performance matches the looks. Music search is a great feature to have when it works properly.

I'd say Sanyo's have real nice search and so does Fisher which was owned by Sanyo

Bad Boy Bill
I was thinking the same, Bill. Having had both the 9998 & 9996 I would have to give the nod to the 9996. It has any feature you could want. Speed, number of songs to skip over, & if I remember, blinky lights. It's the bees knees, as they used to say. just as good as an M-70 without all the clunky noise.

Unfortunately, The boombox itself sounded not the greatest, (like the M-70) So, it followed it down the road. I'll probably have another some day, just like the M-70 everyone raves about.
