if it's more than a one piece unit all parts need to attach to make one unit then It has to have some way to carry it via strap, handle or ? It needs to be able to run on self contained batteries. Beyond that you could argue whether a cassette is required but that's a grey area anymore since the newest units don't have cassettes any more.

I would say aslong as it takes batts has a handle and plays some form of music ontop of radio its a boombox allbeit a crap one of todays standard

Boombox needs:

> Handle or strap for carrying around
> Battery power
> Radio + at least 1 other source (tape, cd, usb,....)

and best in square shape. :-D

boombox =
1)radio tuner
2)amp with volume and (most often) tone control(s)
3)has built in or attachable speaker(s)-must be able to operate normally with the speakers attached.
4)carry handle
5)play some form of recorded media (or have docking station for such media...i.e.- Ipod or,as in some '80s units,a removable cassette player).
6)run on batteries.

This should be a thorough definition of the "boombox minimum"...unless I'm overlooking something.
