Hey all, just looking at buying a little Sanyo M1700F for the collection......something a little different than the big grails. So it got me wondering.....what is the actual smallest boombox from back in the day? This unit looks tiny.....is this it?? Just curious......

Its very nice indeed. Very luxurious with a lot of features I would love to see on bigger units :) It has no metal switch tho... And well.... It does sound small too :)

I've got that little Sanyo...I put it on the shelf between two Sharp GF9000's...made it look even tinier...nice little radio

That's my plan too Mr Northerner......slip it in between the big gf9000 and 777 to give it all some perspective.

And yes that National above is a real little masterpiece!!

As you can see guys, It is very difficult to determine the boundary between the smallest boombox and largest walkman.. :-)

Ira, I think that your panny is belong more in walkman category despite it has two speakers than in the boombox category.
By me, it lacks a proper carrying handle to be a real boombox. :-)

In fact, any of the posted minis do not belong into category of boomboxes if they do not have a handle like on the classic big boombox.

Devil-Toni I tend to agree a little actually, the line is a blurry one indeed! The link of the little Aiwa Micro Boy the good Scotty posted has its little strap and imho fits the aesthetic definition of "Boombox", not to mention it looks rather nice as well. Likewise that stylish little National with its handle fits the look of a Boombox. In posing my original question I hadn't even considered the micro cassette variants of the Boombox......I was only thinking of the standard cassette, however the micro players are definitely boomboxes by definition.......or are they??? Does a Boombox require a fixed handle by definition? Is a strap suffice to warrant the monicker "Boombox"? Or indeed no strap/handle at all??
But regardless I must say my eyes have been opened to a whole new range of units I'll most likely HAVE TO collect!

OK, lets blur the lines a little further, this has no "Proper" handle, is it a boombox?

right chris -

as you all can see - the tiny panny has a hefty chrome loop for the strap-
and it has a chrome telescopic antenna --and it plays and even RECORDS in stereo-
with full size cassettes

tend to think its more boombox than walkman :-)

One swallow does not make a summer......

It looks like that the crown 850 without proper handle was only bad experiment. After this model, the manufacturer has not launched another model without handles - why ;-) .
Also, the other big manufacturers have not adopted this experiment and did not produce models only with straps -without handles.

Nevertheless, today, this model of Crown is one of the the best looking boombox ever made, even though it does not have the classic handles..

They made the csc-980 also without handle. An awesome sounding Crown top model. Far from a Walkman lolView attachment 11644
