SONY-FH-7-MK-11-MUZUK-SETI__21237460_0.jpg

As I sit here typing this, I am listening to my Panasonic RX-C300 boombox and it sounds so lovely. I wonder to myself, what's not to like? The Sony FH series are also such good sounding boomboxes -- they really do sound like compact home stereo units, as opposed to boomboxes.

So I know that alot of folks aren't really into the looks of these types of boomboxes but if that is you, I can't help but wonder whether you've ever owned them or gave them a serious listen to. Because I really think that after listening to them, it's hard to not like them. Just wondering. BTW, the Red Sony is not mine, although I think I would kill to get one. If you got one, just tell me who to snuff out. :w00t:

I have the FH7 Mark II and Norm is right... some these three piecer's of this style sound incredible and go loud and clear!!

I have a MONA 3030 that sounds like a M70 to me and they are easier to find at more reasonable prices - just sayin' if you wanted good sound but couldn't afford a mega grail - other options exist that are looked over........ for now ;-)

Absoloutely Ira, I can swap between my two different models happiy.

One thing I seriously love about my FH-100 is the cassette decks.

ALL the tape control buttons are actually on the doors. It's a completel marvel of design and function.
That there's two fitted so tightly always astounds me.. looking inside these things is a wild ride.

With you on the sound to Norm, the power, dynamic range, detail and clarity are really in the most upper echelon of portables.

Rock On.

Hot damn! I need to find a red Sony FH-7.

Bobby. If you look carefully at the tuner of that Red FH-7, you'll see that it's tuning in final increments of even numbers. That tells me it's a japanese tuner. Our US tuners tune in increments of odd numbers, i.e. 92.1, etc. BUT that doesn't necessarily mean that red ones were never available here. I say that because I saw on partstore.com that red cabinets were listed (but no longer available... duh), so it's only fair to assume that red ones were offered at some point. I've never seen one though.

Ira. The FH-7 has the digital tuner, and that is the one you see in the pic. The FH-3 and FH-5 have analog tuners and while I expect that it will physically fit, I can't say for sure if it will work. That is because the cabling system is proprietary and the FH-7 has 2 strips of cable hookups whereas the FH-3/5 only has one set of cables connections. Also, the FH-3 tuner will look out of place since the color scheme is different. It's all black instead of 2 tone. The FH-5 has that split left/right look but I don't believe it's 2 tone either. So bottom line -- it won't look right and I don't think you'll be able to find "loose" components for sale anyhow. It's either all or nothing, typically with these.

ok --and thanks for the replys --
to me --that nice big sony series seems more like classy home furnishings-

Indeed, there they are! I would say they really are my most favorite boxes to listen to. I wouldn't take them anywhere -- no no, they stay right where I put them. I got portables that are better suited to carrying around. But right next to me, by my computer is my RX-C300, and right there is where it's gonna stay. There is some history with this little beauty, and the previous owner died -- leaving it for his son, to liquidate. The son told me it was on the shelf it's entire life, and it looks like it. :w00t:  So, in keeping with the tradition started by the blessed old gentleman that previously owned it and took loving care of it, I am gonna carry on that method of keeping it on the shelf, so it's gonna stay mint, forever. And if no one else knows what they are missing -- that's fine and dandy with me! Better chances for me to get the next one at a good deal. The only thing is, I wonder where they all are, cuz I haven't seen any since I got mine.

Truth be told, I have to give credence to what Ira says regarding the meet and listening as time was a factor.

That being said, I have heard ad nauseum about the component units getting the cold shoulder baecause it's not "the image" of what markerting/media pushed as a boombox. Yet the ones which this discussion would cover, the super heavyweights, would slay any portable out there volume and sound quality wise except within it's own realm (i.e. Hi-Fi Studio) regardless of it's portabiliity factor.

Plus, the form factor really gave the engineers freedom to tailor sound with fewer limitations.

So like you, I reeeeaaaaaalllllyyyyy dig super heavyweight component boxes because not only can I take what is as close to hi fi sound in a compact unit with me, I'll also get valuable weight training while I'm at it. Sounding good leads to looking good...how can you top that?
