i remember walking along a local beach thinking i want a battry powered portable stereo, i must have been no more than 7 years old at the time.....

My next memory must have been about when i was 10 going on a scouts trip and being in a crowd looking up to see what i can only discribe as being the jvc m90 although i diddnt know what boombox she was at the time,,,,,,,

My next memory i must have been about 13 and already had a boombox the Akai pj33 and just wanting the jvc pc55 for quite a few years..... i had the brocure and totally drooled over her and even had many dreams about going back in time to get one.... this laasted untill i aquired one in about 2004..... sadly i dont get those dreams anymore they were almost better than getting the boombox.......

So what are youre first memories guys.....

Back in the mid to late '70s when I was probably 13 or so,my dad bought one of the very early models from Radio Shack.I remember it was black with a white tuner dial.I marveled at the multifunctional controls and all the inputs.Dad let me use it some but I remember really wanting one of my own.He was never very possessive with anything I can remember except that boombox.I believe its still in storage somewhere.

One memory that sticks out in my mind is seeing a brand new Conion C-100 in the local
record/electronics store for the first time.
I think i was only about 15 or 16 years old at the time.
The owner of the store had it on the counter top and was demonstrating it to a prospective buyer.
I was so amazed by this flashy monstrosity of a box and only ever dreamed of ever having one.
My Parents ended up buying me the Rising SRC-2015 that year as a graduation gift and man was I ever
excited to have my own blaster, yet Still I stopped in every now and then to get a glimpse of that
grail of grails and daydream of maybe someday owning one.

My first boombox memory was in 1981 as a 13 year old seeing my friend open the box on a brand new JVC M70 with a matching JVC turntable that he got for his birthday...I was mesmerized by those blue speakers and wonderful sound. He also got The Many Facets of Roger album which we listened to for hours on end. That memory will be with me for the rest of my life... :-D ...and it is why I love M70's to this day.

I came of age in the 90's and 2000's, and of course, the fad was long dead. The only time I can think of where I saw a proper boombox in use was out in Boston when I was twelve or so. I have no clue what it was, but looking back, I seem to recall it being glitzy and hearkening back to days already long displaced by boom cars. I didn't think too much of it at the time, and what I did think likely wasn't flattering. The streets must have been far more musically exciting in the 80's - more exciting period.

The first time i saw one was at a party . I must have been 12 years old.
My parents' friend had a boombox to take care of some music.
I remember the brand was TOKYO and that this boombox was enormous and very loud.I wanted one like that so hard but didn't have the coin
I believe this brand was sold in the US as kasuga .

Back in the early 70s, Sony's CF-550 was one of the VERY few BBX's out there and I was lucky enough to own one and I was the only kid in my school to own one......I guarded it witrh my life - this was 1973 ! Then in 1976 my father brought home a CF-580. This was portable music at it's best....what a machine ! By '78 the BBX took off.

Those Sony's really set the standard.

I remember them from the beach of Jesolo (italy) in the early 80s.
Young guys cruising with big black boxes.
One scene i remember all the time:
2 guys , shouldering a stick, strapped on it in the middle a ELTA MasterBlaster or similar... :w00t:

I always wanted one of those, but not able to afford this time.

Also we called them on the beach "sandmachines" instead of "soundmachines".
Because the fine sand was not good for the tapedecks... :nonono:

My first personal boombox experience was, as i lent me the PHILIPS 170 mono, for scool.
Needed one for language recording.
But the most time i recorded music on it....

btw: just another memory came up.
Other kids on the beach built sand castles.
I was other.
I built cars, railways, and..... boomboxes!!! :surf:
Must search in the family photo album, sure there are pics of it. :-D

I had the bug early. In 1968, I was 8, and for Christmas my parents let me pick out a radio. I went right for the one that played "Play-tape" 2-track tape cartriges. Kind of like miniature 8 tracks.

My next radio was a GE mono cassette at 14. Played that to death.
Finally, at 16 got a proper boomer, a Sencor that I own to this day.

For me, I think it must have been 1978 or 79 and the Panasonic RX-5040, or very similar. A friend of mine had it, Breakfast in America was a favourite tape in that one. Think it had stereo wide feature, plus he had some big heavy cans. Also in the same household, not sure if it was the same boombox or another one, they recorded Douglas Adams' Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy which was broadcast on radio 4 in (i think) 79. I loved it, from the intro music, to the crazy story and sound effects.
