What is the box in the middle?

Can anyone tell me what make/model that silver box is, that is sitting in the middle of that top shelf?

BTW, the one on the far right is an Aiwa TPR-950..... (which I now own)

I'm thinking Panasonic, Prosonic or GE....

I checked the BBDB and verified with 99% certainty that it is indeed a Zenith R99! Placement of the Zenith name (left, next to tuning window) and the word "extended" below the tape window make me certain it is not the Universum.

Upon close comparison with the Universum box, they definitely have the same button layout and were probably designed by the same originator. The Universum has a few more features though.... 2 x SW radio bands and mic mixing capability and analog VU's instead of LED's like the Zenith. And where the Zenith has two separate knobs for L&R recording level, the universum has the mic mixing control there and for rec vol it uses a dual volume knob to save space. So, the Universum appears to be just a bit more complex.

Both are full featured boxes, though.... line-in, dolby, metal tape capable & even a switch to turn off the VU's!

These do not appear to be very common.

In that case it´s defenitely a Zenith.
Universum was just a brand the german mailorder "Quelle Versand" used.

Yup, good old Quelle, aus Fuerth in Bayern.... Owned by the Schikedanz family.... LOL! They also private-labeled photo gear under the name Revue, if I'm not mistaken. Some of their items were junk, some was really good.

You´re well informed - I see.
Revue SLR´s were rebranded Practica cameras from East Germany. I learned to take photos on a MTL 5. Still a nice camera with good performance.
