Automatic Noise Reduction System. From the manual: "ANRS, compatible with Dolby B noise reduction, lets you play Dolbyized cassettes and make noise-reduced recordings."

JVC fought Dolby Labs over who invented noise reduction first, but apparently they were just trying to get out of paying royalties to Dolby. There was also Super ANRS, which was equivalent to Dolby C. Here's an article about it from January 1972.

Since the 60s there were cutting edge stuff coming out of labs and being introduced to recording studios.

Digital was in the works during those early periods, but the Metal tapes such as TDK MA-Rs are one of my favorite even though some say there are others that have more dynamic range. I still believe the MA-Rs were and still great cassettes. You can record over and over and they still maintain over all their performance plus the look that they hold.
