What defines a boombox?

What makes a boombox a boombox and not just a portable music player?

Does a boombox need to be stereo for example?

I think a proper boombox should have enough power to boom (make the speakers noticeably move when turned up). Therefore smaller and or less powerful portables are not truly BOOM-boxes?

To me...a boom box is a combination stereo radio cassette and even CD an (accounting for modern touches) bluetooth and remote with some decently large speakers.
Be it one piece, two piece, or many (like the original transformer soundwave. Not that puzzle piece modern bullshiite in the movies). With the ability to at least shake your eardrums when you take it high...or loosen the fillings from your teeth and gel your eyeballs when you hit max. :afro:

They have taken the term "Boom Box and even Ghetto Blaster" for marketing purposes to label anything with a set of speakers that you can hook a line to produce sound. Those to me are under the infamous label....EXTERNAL SPEAKER... :nonono: :annoyed:

To a non-enthusiest, a ‘Boombox’ is any device that brings the B-O-O-M.

To vintage box guys, a Boombox is a battery powered portable one piece stereo tape/tuner combo box made between 1974 and 1991.

To eBay sellers, a Boombox is any portable device that’s capable of playing music.

AM/FM Radio (Multi-Tuner even Better....and a good Tuner not crap). The ability to record off of or from any source onto another media (cassette, USB, SD card...doesn't matter but must record). Portable (practical not 600lbs). Allows external media to be played through and on it.

Although not required to be considered a boom box..just a better one IMO. Flashy, loud. Bass and Treble vs Tone, Stereo, Meters, Lights, Aux in.

That's my two cents.
