What's the strangest place you've ever sourced a boombox?

The reason I ask is because I have just been down to my daughters school fete. While I was there, I could here a lovely rumbling bassline so I took a look around and found that it wasn't a PA system, they had in fact got a JVC Kaboom serving the sound to an entire field of people!!

I spoke to the head mistress to find out whose it was and explained my interest. She told me they are about to buy a PA system with some new lottery funding and that in a few weeks she'd sell it to me cheap!! Not sure what model it was but it sounded awesome.

I was not expecting to score today!

At my bank. One of the customer service reps had a mono box playing at her desk. It's a small branch of the bank, with no more than a staff of 3 present at any time, and no PA in the building. When I eyed the box, she offered it to me... and wouldn't take "no" for an answer. It was kinda dirty and needed a cleaning, but turns out it played 8-tracks, too. Not something to write home about, but a nice gesture. The branch now has a smallish (JVC, I thnk) "executive"-type compo.

Yeah Redben ,
Florida doesnt seem to be urban enough to find any kool boomboxes locally.
definitely not a birthplace for kool boomboxes at least not in our neck.
I wonder how local hunting would be in places like NYC.

that's because there are probably more older people living down there, you probably find a lot of walkers and stuff that family members give away when their loved ones pass on.

......In the woods.

Yeah, OK, it was pretty much smashed up, but hey!

It didn't have a back, the top was all smashed in, no handle or antenna, no way to plug it in, or put batteries in it.

The speaker grilles were really beaten in, the front was all scuffed up, the cassette keys were mostly gone or all snapped off, so there was no playing tapes on this.

.........But I still got sound out of it! :w00t:

Took it home, flipped it over, pulled out as much wiring to the speakers as I could and cut the ends away from the circuit boards.

Next, I got a pair of old crappy headphones and cut the wire off them, and chucked the 'phones.

I now have a wire with a jack-plug on the end. I strip the wire ( with my teeth! ) and join that up to the speaker wires in the boombox. I weren't stripping the speaker wires with my teeth......there's no knowing where that boombox has been! :hmmm:

Next, after taping up the wires, I stand up the boombox......Plug the wire into my cheap personal cassette player, drop in a tape, rip-up the volume and hit PLAY.

FANTASTIC !!!! Passive speakers for my personal cassette player!

:-D BoomBoxDeluxe :-D

P.S. I was only 11 when I did this. It was the biggest box I ever saw ( at that time )
