Our esteemed member THAFUZZ asked me if I could take a look at his VZ2000 which wasn't powering on. As it turns out we both found one locally and mine actually worked, so I opened both of them up to take some measurements to see where the bad one might have a difference.
The transformer board is buried underneath the turntable, so that had to come out. After removing a plastic shroud over the components I was able to access them. I started out probing from the component side, but I couldn't get at the leads that well. I was having to bend parts over slightly to get my probes in there.
I decided to remove the board and flip it over so I could have better access to the connections. At this point I wanted to confirm that things were still working on mine so I plugged it in.
DEAD! WTF?
I only touched such a small part of the box, so I went back to check out the parts I bent and sure enough, just that small amount of movement cracked the solder joints on the transistors. I've never seen that happen before. The amount of solder on them was appallingly low, although the rest of the board looked okay. After resoldering all of the transistor leads on both units, they both fired up at full power!
