Just listening to some new vinyl on my vz2000 and whilst it runs beautifully on 33 its a bit variable on 45...goes a little slow on and off. Not a huge problem as I mostly have albums that play on 33 but still... :-/

I fully serviced and rebelted and use it all the time so not sure why its doing it...any ideas? :-D

Does it do it on both sides?
Good point there Bill...just tried it again and it's only on side B which explains why I've never noticed before now...bit weird that?!

Was listening to '19' by Paul Hardcastle as I'd just picked it up on vinyl...was decidedly wobbly on the reverse side

So what's the diagnosis then do you reckon? :-) Belts were both changed and the gearing cleaned.

The VZ uses a reversing motor driver system with an array of transistors. They could be failed, or failing. You'll need the service manual for the schematic to determine the transistors and I recommend you replace them all.

Ok, thanks! That'd be a bit of a challenge for my skills but I have the service manual and would give it a go if it gets worse. Works fine on 33 and on side A on 45 so I can live with that for the moment if the fix is a bit advanced

Thanks for the diagnosis, I appreciate it

I've had some off/on wobble on some too. Never figured out that issue really. I swear sometimes if side A had a wobble, I would switch to B, then back to A and it sometimes seemed to not wobble. Otherwise if the 45 speed is constantly off, there is the adjustment on backside of the turntable board to alter the 33 speed and 45 speed separately.

A month ago I was tweaking one with a DJ friend of mine as he of course has an ear that is much more fine tuned than mine so he could tell the VZ2000 I hooked him up with was running constantly a hair fast. So I were tweaking it a bit and then he wanted to try and he was beat matching between the VZ2000 and his cellphone. Hitting play/pause.... play/pause to get the phone synced. I told him that might be a first. A DJ Matching 1982 boombox technology with a 2013 smart phone. Anyways, I had to take a pic as it was just funny to see a damn good DJ beat match on such a wacky combo. So that's him in the pic with the hair, not me. He goes by Plain Ole Bill, head of the Get Cryphy crew and been tour DJ for Atmosphere/Brother Ali/POS, etc.

Later I hooked it up with a proper Tech1200 turntable for much easier beat matching as we adjusted the VZ2000 to the much easier to cue 1200. We got it to where we thought it was darn near perfect. Then I put it back together and of course it was like -4BPM off. Just finicky and annoying. But then we'd play A, then B, and A again and it might seem fine. Maybe the vertical direct drive turntables and are just never perfect, but as good as needed for most that don't have a fine tuned ear, other than the wobble issue.

Having a hard time understanding why the A side of 45 would sound better on your VZ than the B side. What's the difference besides the label?

the vz has 2 needles one that plays each side of the record without turning it over ,any variance in the wear of the needles will affect sound quality. there is also a 33/45/auto select dial inside the door you might want to put it on auto if it not already set there.

Just out of curiousity; suppose you set that to auto and then load up a 10" record, what speed would it choose? Come to that, what would it do with a 33.3rpm 7" ep or a 45rpm 12" single?
;-)

it has sensors that can tell what size record is in it, also there are buttons on the top select the speed between 45's and lp's and so on.
