Hey guys, I'm in the process of making one nice VZ out of 2 dodgy ones. The project is looking good however, I'm only getting volume from one channel?
Same with headphones, tried different speakers so this isn't the problem either. Does anyone have any ideas? Should I be spraying contact cleaner somewhere or is the problem far worse than that (I figure it probably is  )

is it on the phono, tape, radio Alfie? now and again my VZ number 3 sometimes doesn't work on the right channel (as you look at it) i end up pressing the function button several times, you can hear a crackling/popping sound and eventually the sound comes through. I think its just the contacts in the switches that are corroded or furred up. I did take the board with the switches on out of VZ number 1 and sprayed contact cleaner inside them, just sat there for about an hour working them all. You cant take them apart unless your a wiz with a soldering iron. But im sure it just crap inside them.

hope it is this then it should be an easy fix.

Ahhhh Kev, I was hoping you would chime in :-)

I've only tested it on the tape and radio and it's the same issue. I'll blast the hell out of it tomorrow night with contact cleaner and thoroughly check for any loose connections anywhere.

I'll be gutted if I can't fix it coz she's looking great apart from this problem :annoyed:

Hmmmmmm, think i've found the problem. A loose wire connecting from the box to the speakers. Is this likely to be stopping all volume on the channel?

Can someone advise me of the best way to repair this please? Many thanks, I've got to bring this beast back to life!!!!!!!!!!!

Alfie, if that wire is from the amp out to the speakers, then I guess you've found it!!

First disconnect the four wire connector from the unit, there is a plastic tab that you need to squeeze to "unlock" the connector.

There will been a pin connector that was crimped to secure the orginal wire, it looks like that connector has been abused....maybe even soldered to??

The four pins are secured in the connector block by a small "tab" on the pin that you need to depress to then slide then connector out of the back of the block of four, use a thin tool, slide it down the pin to release the tab.

Then you can open the original crimping, recrimp or resolder to the connector.

Good luck...

you might want to spray the internal /external speaker switch on the back of the vz , mine had the same symptoms as yours aside from the loose wire , it fixed it right up :-D ,i hope you get her sorted out alfie .

the plug with the wire broke out needs pulling out of the socket, you don't have to squeeze the socket out of the speaker box....

that looks like the problem Alfie...............if you cant fix the wire back in like it should be, you could always use a block connector and do all four.......i know it wouldn't look the same, but it looks like it can be salvaged

you will have to spray contact cleaner while the unit is apart, squirting it down the sides of the silver functions buttons does nothing....apart from soak them in contact cleaner....if the broken wire is the cause, i would still spend an hour on the switches like i said, will save you stripping it down again...........

hang on.....VZ 3 is doing it now.......thats it, just rattled the phono switch a few times and she's playing through both speakers (its sitting behind me while im on the pc )......will have to strip this one again, i didn't do the switches on this one.

Hope it cures it mate.....

AAAAAARGGGHHHHHHH, Still nothing!!!!!!!!!! :annoyed: :annoyed:

I've fixed the tape deck, the record player, the tuner!!!!!!!!!! But still this bloody channel wont come to life!!!!!!!!!!! I've fixed the loose connection to the speaker and given the ext speaker switch a good soak of dioxit but still no luck

There is no volume at all on the channel or with the headphones plugged in. The led meter is flashing just fine but there's nothing. The speaker is alive, if you listen closely you can hear the faint hum of power in there, just no sign of music. Anymore ideas??? I'm so close to having this baby perfect. As a record collector it means heaps for me to have a boomer that I can play my vinyl on. HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The broken connection might visibly look good. But you really should test it with an ohmmeter at the extreme ends away from the connection if you can find where the wire goes. You also need to determine if the wire is shorted someplace. There is also a possibility of a blown amp or an open coupling capacitor.

But my money is that the issue lies in either of these places:
(1) Poor connection in the connectors
(2) Dirty or broken headphone jacks.
(3) Dirty of broken internal/external speaker switch.

Can you try the line-out to another boombox and see if you are getting both channels working OK through the other boombox when connected in this manner?

Ok, I ran out of contact cleaner so I'll grab some more today and give all switches a real good going over.

I'll also try the line out through another box and get back to you. Thanks for the input, i'm not giving up on this beast, I'm soooooooo close!!!!!!!!
