My main VZ was struggling to rewind or fast forward a tape especially when the APSS was engaged. Someone said it might be the pinch roller. I did find a pinch roller but it was in Australia, and my good friend Alfie......purchased the roller and posted it on to me. (it arrived today Alfie thank you for your help)
I stripped the VZ down and replaced the pinch roller, but it didn't make any difference, the pinch roller isn't engaged when FF/RW or with APSS but Ive found out why, the two drive shafts run via a rubber ring around a brass collar at the base behind the deck plate, which runs on the back of the main drive pulley. Around the main drive pulley (which is made of aluminum) is a plastic ring that has a roughish surface that the rubber rings on the shafts run on. The mechanics of the deck drop the shafts onto the plastic ring.
All i had to do was clean the rubber rings and the plastic rough surface. A bit of sod to get to (well the FF one is RW isn't too bad) but cleaning with Eclipse optical cleaning solution (what i clean my Digital SLR sensor with) did the trick. Tons of black crap came off, probably years of RW/FF or just being stood. Anyway, it FF/RW perfect now
Ive just RW/FF a tape about 10 times and it perfect, APSS works fine too.
Again many thanks to Alfie for getting me the pinch roller, it did need changing as the old one looked a bit dodgy......your a top bloke......thanks
a couple of shots if anyone need reference, the rubber is on the opposite end of the small cog on the photo.....you don't have to strip the deck to swap the pinch roller or clean the rubber rings, just undo the two screw that hold the operating switches onto the base on the left of the pinch roller. Oh and be careful how the springs come off, remember which way the small one goes back on. the second photo shows the rubber ring that needs to be cleaned...there are two.....the other takes some finding, I just couldnt photograph it....to difficult but I managed to get to with a cotton bud, you have to put a tape in and set it going in FF or you cant clean it.
Hope it helps someone.
