Hi,

First time poster...

Getting my 25yrs old VZ back up and running and apart from some cosmetic issues, broken switches/sliders, it dont look too bad. (should never have let three sisters look after it) Found loads of help on here so first and foremost a big thank you to everyone who has shared their knowledge.

I have the same problems with turntable belts that have turned to a sticky old mess but have managed to clean up without too many issues.

The cassette is where I have run into something I cant seem to find the answer here on the forum. It plays but only through one channel and the level meter reflects this as only one lights up. If I record something it seems to be recording both channels as the meter lights up on both sides. Its just on playback the problems happens.

Any ideas folks???

cheers

Mark :hmmm:

Hi Mark & welcome , i'm a newbie myself.

When you say there is only sound on one channel when playing tapes, is there any sound at all - even very low?
I trust you have cleaned the heads up & adjusted azimuth ;-)
If the tape head has had a hard life over the last 25yrs it could be down to wear.

Woodnbox..

mate thanks for the welcome...

Ok Im a bit of a fool haven't cleaned anything yet on the tape deck..so maybe jumped the gun. I have it in bits at the moment.. have cleaned everything else in preparation and got a little but excited when i connected the speakers just to hear the tuner. Hence the first post.

Before I took it apart the only thing working was the tape but only on one side.

I need to take the dog for a walk before the good lady gets in from work so have had to abandon operation resurrection for today.

I will check and clean the heads bit scared of altering the azimuth tho..I'll update you when I've had a chance to clean the heads etc..

Thanks again mate.

Good luck with cleaning the heads. I did it with my VZ and it made a world of difference as the heads had probably never been cleaned. I used isopropyl alcohol and a few cotton buds. While you have it apart, i would recommend changing the three belts so you know everything is tip top.

I look forward to hearing how you get on.

I should of said before that adjusting the azimuth should be the very last thing - a last resort.
Just follow the above advice from the guys. ;-)

Superduper

Forgive my ignorance. Where is the playback switch located.

It's usually located on the amp board. It looks like a long slider switch with an end that is pushed/ pulled by a bar from off record key on deck  put a small amount of deoxit in hole on top and push/pull switch 20-30 times to clean inside ;-)

Guys,

Struggling with this a little. I m not sure if I have found the playback switch yet. Is the amp board on the tape unit or eIswhere in the box. I have noticed when I press stop the level meter on the dead side flickers

Sorry bit new to all this :dunce:

Mark

Ps I will try and upload some pics if i can work out how to!!!!!!

I found it a very difficult and frustrating process trying to post pictures as well. If you look in the Comments and Suggestions section which is located toward the bottom of the forum index, you will see my thread on this. It describes how i eventually was able to post pictures.

Good luck, and don't give up on the tape deck.

Cheers

check you balance slider switch, my VZ was playing great one day, the next no sound from the right speaker, squirt a little contact cleaner and work the switch, worked for me. Another problem with the VZ's are the function buttons, they get sticky and if you lightly press the button, you sometimes hear the sound jumping.......dont press to hard, you will break the button. The switches are not directly under the buttons, so dont bother spaying them with contact cleaner, you will have to take the unit apart to lube those switches.

Another issue can be you switches need to be cleaned. From inside unit , droit all your switches with small amount and work each switch back and forth 10-20 times. Most switches have a small hole so you can put straw in. Good luck
